I've been up here in the mountains of Washington State for about 4 and a half months, building our house.

Just finishing up the exterior, minus a few details which will happen after I finish off the interior next Summer.

Ready to go back to SF for a while and recharge.

Check out the building blog if you have a moment - a few cycling posts in there ; )

Chris, I'm interested in a vacation/ retirement place and totally dig not just what you've built but the location-- beautiful.

Do you mind a question or two? How many square feet? and are you the GC on the project and doing most of the work yourself?

Thanks,
-dale

Dale -

Ask away ; )

It's 1600 sq. ft. I have done all the work except for the excavation and foundation work.

The Methow Valley is an amazing place - lots of recreation with excellent mountain, cross(fire roads), and road biking.

Pretty open floor plan?
Is this going to be a full time residence for you or a second home/ vacation home?

I've looked at so many floor plans/ small home designs that my brain goes numb at times, but think about that size would be perfect for me-- open floor plan, two bedroom, loft, garage, and a small workshop close by.

That's awesome huck. You don't happen to know a couple of Canadians from Whistler building a house in Methow do you?

Very open floor plan - spent a lot of time designing it, even though in the end the design is quite simple.

Two bedrooms, two baths with a detached garage with a separated workout room.

We will be moving in full time in two years.

OF - I haven't had time to meet many new people this Summer, so no, but would enjoy meeting some Canadians ; )

Chris, such a beautiful spot you have there. Just curious as to what the pitch of that roof is?

Thanks so much, guys!

Spud - the pitch is 1:12 - 14" I-Joists 16" OC, sitting on parallel 6x12 Glulams with a mechanically seamed metal roof designed for low slopes. No worries about the snow load.

I built the garage last Summer which is basically a smaller 1 story version of this house, minus the bump-out, so I was able to have a smaller test with myself, materials, and building techniques involved - except for the double walls which I built into the house for the larger insulation cavity - 11", which will put me close to R60 in the walls.

Nice Huck!

I love the Methow Valley but with every passing year I like cold weather a little less so if I ever move from Boise it will be south. I have an uncle who has acres near Winthrop and Chelan but he spends most of his time at his condo in Leavenworth.

JM - I hear you on the cold, and getting older ; )

Skinny - solar panels will be dictated by what is left in the budget at the end of the build - would really like to incorporate them as we have excellent Southern exposure.
