Is it true this forum is going under?

If so, where are the Velonews expats going to next?

Berzin beat me to it. It the main page hadn't changed, I was going to ping Keith as it's been a week for that Darach McQuaid headline.

Then again...do I really want tri guy/girl giving me bike handling advice?

PS - If this forum group implodes today, I end up with the coveted #51 (post)!

I was wondering that myself. I kept refreshing the page to see if Chrome just wasn't updating the site. I so, so miss the VN forum. I thought that this was going to be a good landing for the old forumites but it never really got going. Been looking at Slowtwitch and Cyclingnews but there are a LOT of a-holes in those forums. Not that VN didn't have jerks (or rather, one big jerk with 6 usernames), but the posters in Cyclingnews are vicious.

He is going to keep the forum up for us.

He said to me cryptically, "long story on the rest..."

So...it ain't good.

I'll never forget the Sole of the Dark Night! Dude was nuts. A few other wild personalities over the years

Thank Steve for us KR

If this goes down it'll probably be it for me with forums and what not. Long live VN from back in the day. The other options all have a niche group I just don't want to deal with. Cyclingnews is a total wreck (one could write a book or a TV series with all its disfunction) , Slowtwitch is hard for me to even describe, Paceline - argumentative 50 year old hoarders, Velocipede Salon - a clever, clever club. The rest are kinda full of the unwashed. Hope this stays up

huck, and I am 60! So I guess I've moved on.

I do have 6 bikes, but the ones I don't ride much (hoarding) are a ~1980 LeTour set up as a commuter (and weighs a full 30 pounds before WBs, lights and bags) and Team Dumpster, a bike I have crashed with real injuries to myself twice. (Neither the fault of the bike but I am having association challenges. Besides its replacement is way too much fun.)

To get back to topic, didn't one of the LA fans who bravely stayed on at VN to save the fort predict we would destroy this place like we did Velonews?

My guess is the UCI is shutting this place down due to illegal discussions on jersey numbers.

OC, if you are right, just ban me and inform UCI the troublemaker is gone. Specialized? We need to find an ACLU lawyer willing to take this on pro bono. And start twittering.

Was that "weird guy" bamboo or danboo, or whatever he called himself?

It would be a shame if this forum shut down. A place where everyone got along....

Whatever it is that Velonation is going through Steve has my sympathy, these niche ventures aren't easy to keep rolling. In any case, they've done some great reporting and punched well above their weight.

Meantime I haven't participated in the forum really at all lately. It's been a good and busy start to the year, with a trip to AZ in January (can not recommend The Cycling House highly enough - wonderful people and just an awesome week), followed by a move from DC to RI (putting the RI back in DKRI after nearly a decade), new consulting/contract job in addition to November which is threatening to become a monster, and trying to stay in some modicum of shape to get ready for racing this spring.

It's funny to move from a place where cycling culture runs as thick as it does in DC, to a place where it does not. There are all these ridiculous beautiful country roads near the south coast RI/MA border where you literally don't stop pedaling for multiple hours (my brake pads will last FOREVER!) and you never see anyone out on them. At all. Looking forward to racing to start so I can figure out where everyone's hiding. First a side trip to the far east starting Friday.

This is the only forum group that's ever been worth it for me. Shame if it goes.

That's a great endorsement for RI/MA. Have to put that on my wish list.

DKRI...I spent a year detoxing and riding up in Rhode Island back in 94-95.

Easily the best riding I have EVER done on a regular basis. Riding out to Sciuate Reservoir...awesome riding.

But like you said. No riding culture. My landlord and co-workers would come in on Monday, 'Keith I saw you ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STATE on Saturday?!?!?"

But they know their Italian food up that way...man.

So are you moving November Bikes up that way?

Yeah....Steve did it right for as long as he could. So much competition on the interwebs now.

Makes me want to ride around the reservoir right now, but it's too cold, there is snow on the roads and there are coyotes out there now. There is quite a bit of riding going on up here in the RI/MA/CT area. You just need to know where to look.

Hi Gang,

Long time no see/hear/write. Life has been chaotic, but generally in a positive direction. And now that I finally check back in, y'all are talking about bailing!

To be honest, I think the main reason this site has not had the energy of the VN site is that the format is too divided up by topics. As frustrating as the VN site was, it did foster a freewheeling exchange of random ideas...some of them even bike-related. This site is fine if you want to check in for specific information, but not to hang and chat with your buds.

Now, I know this is likely to get me lynched, but what if Keith set up a Facebook Group for all us refugees? I've been connected with a couple of FB groups, and they actually work fairly well. Of course, the downside is that we will probably all discover far more about each other than we really want to....

Anyway, that's my $0.02.

Hugs,

Rachel

also haven't been around much.

I do agree with Rachel that too many topics make for a bad forum.

Said as much to Steve when we migrated and he said he'd monitor it. Definitely not complaining, by the same token I haven't been around much either.

Have a couple of Facebook groups going and I really feel that would be the best option for us VN ex-pats for now. You can lock it down as secure as you like. There will be no spam, no bots, easy to post pics and links; honestly, I don't see a downside.

If some Luddite here doesn't have a FB identity he/she could create it solely for the VN page and set preferences as such. Wouldn't be much different than creating a login here.

Hey all.
Been around. But silent.
Recently retired last November and read this forum regularly with my morning coffee. Came over from VN. I can remember the Goatroper saga if that's an indication of how long I've been lurking. Not much to add to many topics. But I enjoy the reads just like I enjoy the rides.

Look what's all coming out of the woodwork.

Don't agree on the topics format being root cause for lower traffic here. Simply by clicking on "active topics" you get the same feel of old forum with all topics showing together. The usability of this site is much better than the old site in this respect IMO.

The key ingredient lacking compared to old phorum is perhaps that you can't see who's on-line. So for all you know you may just be talking bull to yourself. That limits its functioning as a chatroom.

Same with the FB VN group (it already exists) getting little traction. Apart from your "friends" you can't tell whose online (no PA, that wasn't Danish, those are things you eat).

agree with OC about using the active topics link to filter the interface. Only one topic is active now.
