It may be useful to have a thread where we cam keep VeloNation i.e., Steve, abreast of our observations about the VeloNation website in general, and these forums in particular (as opposed to a number of threads in the various sub fori) . It is then up to VN to do something with our sage wisdom, or alternatively, fully ignore our cr@p.

My first observation is that in the mass migration from VN (news) to VN (nation) a lot of people were confused as how to sign up for VeloNation, even with several explanations by the forum members in the VeloNews forums. To grow membership it is probably useful to make it more obvious how to sign up e.g. to have a largish 'Join VeloNation' tab on the home page, or something along those lines.

When clicking on a user name (and in some other circumstances) the user's name is shown - this is not desired by many of the users.

Interesting point, login shows-up in the upper right-hand corner on each of the tabs except the Forums tab.

IMHO, I don't think Velonews management gives a $hit about their forum. As long as cash keeps coming in from the banner ads that run on it.

Yeah, that's why most of us are now here.

VeloNation, on the other hand, does appear to really care, and it is my hope that they will view this feedback thread as useful to them

One feature I really like in some other forums is a "Next Post" button for each thread with new posts.
I always go straight to the "Not Read" list, then I have to remember where the conversation left off. Since it remembers what threads have been read, could it remember the last post I saw, and take me straight there?

One particular issue I have is that the forum software does not seem to recognize my hard returns.

Like these I am putting between every sentence.

The text still comes out in one block.

I have IE9 on my work laptop and PC.

It is actually fine using Firefox at home.

This looks good now but when I hit submit, it gets put al together.

Welcome and thanks for coming on board from everyone here!

I will do what I can to improve and have been working on some things that I've seen in the threads. Keep in mind, this migration was a pleasant surprise, but you did catch us by surprise and there wasn't time to do some "Spring Cleaning" since it happened so quickly.

There are some things there that I would have certainly changed (or hidden) had I know. That being said, I'm going to look into upgrading this software to give you a better feature set and more social options that I think everyone would really enjoy. It would have been easier to do before everyone came on board, but no complaints here - it's great to see this place being used for what it was meant for!

One thing I should say is to create a VeloNation account rather than trying to hook it up with Facebook/Twitter etc. - we don't use it internally (VN staff), and I don't know how stable it is...if you have an account, and you're using the social login and need help, ping me at support @ oururl.com

Thanks, and things will get better - it won't be overnight, but it will happen, so thanks for your patience!

Thanks for replying and being such a gracious host! It would be very unrealistic, not to mention presumptuous, to expect you to react to every whim of us newcomers. I started this thread in the hope that it will be of use to you, certainly not with the expectation that you can or want to address every issue that may be raised.

Please note that those that came from Velonews are used to an absurdly low standard (the mods appeared to be fully ignored by the management as of late) . The fact that you have posted at all puts you miles ahead of what I am used to! This is quite the nice place that you are providing.

No worries, VN is happy to provide you a home!

I'll try to work out the naming stuff with username and real name showing over the weekend - I'm pretty sure I know why it's doing it, but need to do a bit of testing before pulling the trigger. I converted to real name from username, I now just need to find and undo everything I did.

As the alter ego of one of the mods over on VeloNews, let me just say that I really, really appreciate all your efforts, Steve.

The folks migrating over are a great crew of amiable misfits, and I'm sure you'll find them as wonderful as I always have.

Thanks Rachel, I'm happy to do what I can to make this better - Keith and I know each other from riding back in the day, so you're all just extended family to me!

Reminds me of my racing days, Boston in the '70s. Every March, I would train on square wheels. My fix gear wheels would go into the fall with decent 400 gm training rims. By January, all the spoke nipples would be frozen from the road salt. By March, there would be a bunch of flat spots caused by the potholes. (They wouldn't be very true either since I hadn't touched a spoke in months.) Actually it wasn't as bad as it sounds. I would still be riding cyclocross tires which went a long ways toward making the squares rideable.

April, new rims, spokes and tires went on. Life was good!

Edit: The quote feature is cool! And I got it to work first try.

Yes, thanks Steve. Really happy to have a working forum again. I was worried that we would all just fade away.

Question about avatars: I can see other people's avatars, but only sometimes see mine. Is it there?

EDIT: ok, it was gone from my profile. Re-loaded it for try #2

Thanks!

BBCode doesn't seem to work, e.g.:

[url]http://www.velonation.com[/url]
[url=http://www.velonation.com]Example[/url]

however, straight HTML tag does. you have to type (leave out the space after the brackets) < a href="http://www.exampleURL.com/Forums/afv/post/aff/40/aft/165/afq/1122.aspx">text you want to hyperlink< /a>

example: click here to go to the velonation home page

Hey Steve - One question: Can you change the CSS so that links are underlined in the text? They are a touch hard to pick out for me (though that might be my eyes.

That said, I will also echo what others have said: thanks for the site This is great.

Hey @pikeHillRoad - I haven't ignored you - I'll look into this over the weekend.

@jmdirt (if you see this) - I renewed the security certificate so that should be good to go now.

thanks!

On this form it seems the active topics only show up when someone has just posted or is still on the site. Then it disappears. I liked the VN forum where the topics list was simply the most recent first and they got pushed off the page as other topics were posted.

Would it be possible to add a little space on the"Not Read" form between the bottom thread and the mark all button?

I use an iPad at home, and sometimes fat finger the mark all button instead of selecting the oldest thread.

C2K, you can always select a bigger time window with the button that shows the date and time after you've hit Not Read or Active Topics.

Same here. I never noticed the period pull-down. Keep the hints coming.
