anyone trying the dry january thing? no drinking for the whole month. the gf and i are trying it. so far so good. i actually feel a lot better although this is stout drinking weather. |

everything in moderation and that does not sound like moderation. 
I'm not really a drinker though so there are often many months when I don't drink. |

| I pretty much gave up alcohol when I retired 16 years ago...I do have a beer now and then or a glass of white wine... I can live without the stuff...when I first retired I used to check the daily newspaper to see who had the best sale on beer..I thought I needed to find something else to do with my time and I started cycling again after not riding for several years....cycling was my new beginning...booze free... |

Nope. I'm pretty much a wino. You guys would think I'm crazy if you knew how much we spend and how wine we have. I drink two or three glasses on Friday and Saturday and sometimes a glass another time or two per week, depending on what is open.  |

| we certainly aren't out of control, mostly a beer or glass of wine every night. weekends are 2 maybe 3 drinks depending on the social situation. i like drinking so i won't quit but i also like feeling good having not had any alcohol in a few days. i quit once for a year just to see if it was possible. for me it's not worth it for that long but a month is nothing. i'm trying to put on weight also so i figured alcohol would pack it on. nope. |

| The amount you would have to drink to really put on weight might classify you as an alcoholic. Imagine a bottle of wine a night, every night, for a week to put on one pound. |

| NO. I enjoy drinking a good beer a few times per week, with a shot of Patron a few times a month as well. |

I also retired 16 years ago and did a fair amount of drinking on the job so didn't see why retirement should change that. The only health issues are Hypertension and cycling helps that. Dr said 1 drink a day so I am following Dr's orders. I drink a Martini with a Gin with a breath of cucumber, three olives either garlic or blue cheese stuffed so I figure I am getting my protein and veggies. I usually do a birthday/age ride which should be 82 miles in April. It will be a struggle but I will get it done if it takes all day. I could stop and I have at times but I just like a Martini before dinner on the deck gawking at the lake. I have never heard of the dry January so it is too late now so I will pass

Yeah I hear ya, I gave it up over 25 years ago,that and smoking, had to go cold turkey. Best decision I've ever done in my life. I would have been lucky to have still been around had I not, much less cycling and my health in general. Took 3 nice rides this week totaling over 100 miles. Doing the Paradise Loop was my favorite ride of the week, nice crisp weather on undulating roads with a friend,we did a couple of stops to smell the roses and enjoy the sights along the way.
