Sunday, after riding, I threw on my running shoes and ran 4 blocks. Knew if I went further, I was risking a bad step and the my shins were taking a beating. Felt OK yesterday, This morning, my shins!

But it is a start. And I know I have to. The shin splints say it all. I need the impact to strengthen all aspects of my skeleton. I want to stop hearing of bone loss every time I get X-rayed.

I wonder, is this going to take years before I can run as I want to? I loved running X-country in high school. I wasn't fast and my coach didn't care if I ran the meets but I loved just running 3+ miles in those X-country flats. Never did like the big heel shoes that ruled the market after that. Now I have "zero-tilt: shoes and can run like I am supposed to, but it has been 40 years! I hope this 60 year old can get back to being able to do a 8-10 mile run again.

My impact sport is skiing. I've already made some hard impacts in last couple weeks; that should do me for the year :-)

Running, besides being so pedestrian, I don't know if it's worth it. My wife is always complaining, a bunch of her friends are complaining and a bunch of people at work too, knees, shins, etc. I always tell them to get a life, i.e. a bike

Sounds like Tai was starting to run too, and also ran into problems. See...

OC, I've spent 40 years on the bike. I've got the bone loss that happens with no impact sports. I break bones easily. I owe it to my body to do this. My challenge is going slow enough to avoid injury which means staying on the edge of shin splints and the like, but not going further.

Ben - I'd consider an alternative like pick-up soccer. You still get to run and get benefits of impact sport possibly without some of its pitfalls. Plus its social.

It took me about a year or so before I could just go out and run a bunch of miles. It's a superpower that you have to maintain or you lose it. It's worth it as it keeps the legs in shape for long hard hikes. I prefer trails. It takes awhile for the body to adjust so it is not hurting during the run and for days afterwards. You might want to just try walking for awhile to get feet and legs used to weight-bearing activity.

Be sure to incorporate strength training as well. At age 60, annual muscle loss can be as big of a concern as bone density.

I said this someplace else but I only run on trails or padded tracks at this point in my life in order to take the impact off the bones and joints.

Best thing about running as exercise, IMO, is the utter simplicity: shirt, shorts, shoes.

Ben, I rec that you spend time WALKING - say 2-4 miles at a time, several times a week - before running. Less impact, and likely of significant benefit. It should make the transition to running easier, when you want something more aerobic / faster.

I have not gotten 'far' with it yet, but I recently bought a speed rope, and intend to do intervals with it for about 30 min 3x per week.

Just be patient and build up your mileage gradually. I've gotten way slower but can still do 35-40 miles (plus 3-4 hours on the trainer) a week without injuries. It's great, especially when traveling, to have an aerobic alternative that doesn't involve equipment.

P.S. -- I turn 68 this weekend.

Yeah, easy does it, make a plan and pick appropriate terrain. You also need to consider the contradictions in musle usage between cycling and running.

The last time I managed to just jump into some shoes and start running out of the blue was a couple decades ago, the Toronto half marathon, a bet with my then young wife I'd be able to keep up untrained. I won that bet but with the predictable hurt that followed in the weeks after I swore I'd never run again, unless she'd do a marathon. I'm still waiting :-)

Me playing soccer? Now that's an accident waiting to happen! Besides, social? I'm the guy you don't want on your team.
