I was near hit today by a woman who rolled a stop sign then hit the gas when I yelled.  I had entered the intersection after stopping as this woman was rolling up to her sign on my right.  She had time to stop after I yelled, but instead, hesitated, then accelerated.  I yelled again, now not far from her window (I was braking hard) and I saw her react to that.

Got her car model and plates and called 911.  An officer called back (twice; I was riding and missed his first).  Told him what happened.  He asked me what I wanted him to do, explaining he couldn't press charges without seeing it.  I asked him to contact her.  He said he would do that.

I suspect that will get her attention.  I will grant her a lilttle leeway on her not seeing me as she was looking into the sun at around 6:00.  But that is simply more reason to stop.  She looked to be a 40s middle class or better woman, driving a Honda CR-V (small) SUV that looked new.

Just maybe her awareness will be raised a tad.

Oh, I entered the intersection in the drops, fingers on my brakes and with excellent (not too powerful) brakes.  Grippy tires.  Any less and I could not have pulled off that stop.

I feel bad for you, but call 911 for emergency use only. Feel free to call the police station when you get home.

Here, the first thing the computer asks you if call 911 is "Do you need help?" Unless you say yes, it is assumed not urgent.

Sorry it happened. Hopefully after a talk with the police officer, she'll be more careful in the future.

Had a very similar experience over Spring Break....except the driver in my case intentionally swerved over and then jammed on the brakes once she passed me. I jammed on the brakes, briefly breaking traction and make me at least start looking at bail-out options. Luckily she then accelerated away.

I chased for a bot, knowing she was coming up to section where the traffic gets jammed up. Almost caught up to her at the intersection and I start yelling at the "cop" directing traffic "Stop that car! Stop that car!" She didn't (really just a civilian directing traffic, not a real cop), but immediately called for an officer. Like ben, the cop told me there was not much he could do without having witnessed it, so what did I want to see happen. Told him just to call her and let her know about the potential reprucussions of her actions, blah, blah, blah.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

I had a car intentional move over crowding me onto the shoulder and like a person with tourettes I slammed my palm on the door and motioned for the passenger to roll down the window which she did.

"Hey, ***hole, what the **** are you trying to do? There's plenty of room for all of us."

Not a real civil conversation starter, I admit, but there was zero traffic on the two lane county road. I called the sheriffs department when I got home and asked the dispatcher to contact the person and let them know the rules of the road. She said the driver had already called in and told them he "might have accidentally gotten too close to some bicyclists out on D Highway." I told the dispatcher that was a nice preemptive call but it was intentional and I had three other cyclists that will attest to that fact.

Next day I got a call from a deputy telling me he talked to the driver and "got the real story" about our gang of marauding bikers. WTH? I told the guy we were on pedal bicycles not Harley-Davisons, and the guy moved over on me intentionally. I told him I weigh 140 pounds and was on a 17 pound bicycle, exactly how am I a threat to a 4,000 car? He ended the conversation telling me to "better watch yourself."

I've dealt with that deputy before and he's a complete ***hole. To my good fortune I know a bunch of the other cops and deputies in the little town and county where I live and this clown is the exception.

At 140 pounds I should not be mouthing off to people in cars… or anywhere else.

Ben, maybe next time you have actually make contact with the car. Then it would be a hit-and-run.

In the city, I wouldn't take this stuff personally. For every driver you try to "change", there are a million more just like them. Drivers are just as $hitty to other drivers as they are to bikes.

Out in the country, it tends to be more personal.

A friend was out riding a couple years ago and a car buzzed her, then turned around, came back and started hassling her and swerving etc. And . . . a cop did see it! They got busted. Never found out the outcome though.
