Out with the club yesterday and a group of us "A-" riders (A- gets shelled from the "A" group part-way through the ride, but are too fast for the "B" group) are re-grouping and waiting for a couple stragglers about 200 yds back to arrive so we can set out again.
One guys phone rings and he answers. Basically ends up chatting with a buddy for the next 4-5 min until he finally realized most of us are giving him the evil eye.
[DISCLAIMER: If the call is a legit emergency or any other reasonable, important issue that needs attention by all means take the call & deal with it there and then. I personally will take no issue.]
Ride resume, with that slight feel of awkwardness in the air.
I was about ready to shove off and I know the others would have been right on my wheel. If it happens again, I'll have to POLITELY suggest that if the call is purely a chat session, he should:
A. Wave us on so the chat can continue un-incumbered by others
B. Tell the caller that he's in the middle of a ride, folk are waiting and he'll call back later
Appropriate? Too strong/bossy for a club ride? |

Red, those actions would be totally appropriate. He is endangering all of you. Even if it is an emergency, pull over and stop! Or drift to the back and off if you have to keep riding.
My peeve here in Portland; brakeless fixie riders who get on my wheel. (I will get revenge. The day will come when one does this without announcing his presence and I will take him out with the good brakes on all my fixies. If my bike gets damaged or me hurt, he gets sued. On principal, to have this heard in court.

| my cousin comes over from texas for vacation. she brings her bike which is a neighborhood cruiser. she's a chunky monkey and unhealthy but she had been riding a little bit every day. she wanted me to take her on a nice ride so we rode out at the beach out to the fort, about 10 miles round trip. we're riding and chatting having a good time. her phone goes off so she stops to answer it. at first i'm a little miffed but she keeps talking. after about 5 minutes i signal to her i've got to take a leak so i sprint ahead fuming the whole way. i come out of the restroom to see her back to riding. i pull up next to her and she says she's sorry, she had to answer. it was her doctor's office calling to make sure she's getting enough exercise, eating right and feeling good due to her diabetes. she gets a break on her insurance if she follows the rules. |

Ben - I don't think you read Tornado's post correctly; sounds to me the entire ride was stopped and waiting because of the one dude's phone call. No danger, but highly annoying. Just not done.
This is why I ride alone on Fridays; I can answer my work email while giving chase. It's an annoying habit only to myself but the added benefit is that with email completed and cellphone still in hand I can snap a pic of the guy I just caught, before dropping him. This was the one handed catch of the year :-)

Mr Cellphone didn't have one of those bluetooth earpiece thingies? What a Luddite! I bet he was riding a steel bike with 9 speed Ultegra, too!

| The last (and only) time I talked on a cell phone on a ride is when my wife called to inform me that our daughter had gone into labor and I needed to get home pronto so we could drive to the hospital. She had called twice before and I did not hear the phone ring. I still have to voice mails in my history. Otherwise the phone is for emergency use only... |

| It is illegal and dangerous. How many cyclists are killed by distracted drivers? why would we tolerate it just because he is on a bike? If he is riding with me I want his attention on the ride. |

OC, I did mis-read the initial post. But the group stopping brings up a bigger question. A ringing cell phone can bring a whole group to a stop? I don't get it. To me, the people I am with are always more important than someone at the other end of a phone. I fully expect them to believe the same. If I choose to stop, I am saying goodby to them. If they have lives, if they have backbones, they aren't going to stop because MY phone is ringing.
To me, the dirty eye was uncalled for. They CHOSE to stop. They chose to place someone's personal stuff in front of the best for everyone else. This sets a precedent; that it is OK to drag your personal stuff into group events. No, leave it at home, attend to it later.
There are exceptions and I am about to start a thread talking about one.

| LOL Ben - I think you still misread it. The group was already stopped for some stragglers, then someone's phone rings making the stop longer than needed. But you're right; if I am in a group the phone is off if it comes along at all. |

I bring my phone with me but it is for out going calls only. "Can you come pick me up ? "
Everything else can wait. My wife fussed at me once about not being able to get a hold of me while I was out riding. It wasn't for anything really important but she said what if it was an emergency, I said name me one emergency that if you reached me and I'm 20 miles from home on my bike that I could do anything to help with ? I'm still waiting to hear one.
Emergency ? call 911, if you "need" to tell me something it can wait. life existed before people had cell phones. |

| not to gloat but i don't have a cell phone, well i have two but they are both in a drawer at home and they only come out when i go touring or something. i don't understand the fascination. |

Resume the ride, drop the dude - he'll never do it again.
People that talk on the cell at the golf course are just as annoying. As someone else mentioned, outgoing calls only - immediate need related. I need a ride or the foursome is out of beer |

Pin, I haven't done this yet, but it has tempted me many times. Answer them, ask a followup question or repeat back what they said. After all, it's not even remotely private conversation. (And say it loud enough for the other end of the line to hear.)
