Dale, the funny other side to this is that we can talk to total strangers of the other sex re: that stuff if we are both true cyclists and one of us is in dire need and the other has it or valuable information. I learned about Bag Balm from a tandem stoker I'd ridden beside maybe 20 minutes (and actually, we were both doing just fine).

| I have never felt the....um, NEED to coat the nether regions. Especially after I saw Hell On Wheels. Once I saw how much shammy cream a pro puts on their bibs, I was enlightened. Lather the crap out of your shorts, that is the key. |

I used to coat the chamois, but realized a few years ago that it was a huge waste. Didn't need that much everywhere.
I now just coat the undercarriage and call it good. |

| I remember that segment KR. It was a Telekom soigneur lathering up the chamois for either Zabel or Aldag. Covered the ENTIRE chamois, not just the important parts. |

| In the old days we coated the chamois. All of it. Chamois was actually chamois leather. Needed to be dressed as any leather to stay soft, especially if washed with soap (I hope!) So the chamois dressings were dual purpose. I suspect that soigneur was used to doing real chamois and simply did the new stuff the same. |

Bag Balm probably doesn't have any modern "good" properties. It was formulated over 100 years ago to protect cow's teats from the abuse of the brand new mechanical milkers using seat of the pants research and available materials. And as with so many things developed by inventive minds when the need was there, it works.
I've never consulted my pores re: their living conditions while using the stuff. All I know is that I have never regretted using it; for one day or a week straight. I have regretted not using it more than a few times. And when I have had to ride with conditions (like open sores) that scream "don't", Bag Balm is a gift from above.
I don't bother with the cycling specific creams. If the event is import, Bag Balm is coming along just in case anyway. It's messier and requires more soap for hands. (Wetnaps work just fine. No special wash is needed for the shorts.) And it is so cheap it's really no expense at all. ($8 for a can that will last years and it does. I suspect the original batch would work just fine after stirring.) So, it's just simpler to use it and leave the rest on the store shelves.

Bag Balm is a pain to wash out of your chamois.
I have used Udderly Smooth Udder Cream in the past (available at walgreens, rite aid, or cvs) and it works well and is water-based so washes out well. Seems that it has been discovered by cyclists as they now have a new product "chamois cream" which I believe is just a bit thicker but surely more expensive than the original recipe. |

I tries a new combo of Bag Balm and Under Armour "Boxer Briefs". I've been using the U As for years to support my knee warmers. Great for shorter rides but chafe prone if I go longer. For those rides I've been wearing Trek cycling briefs. For a short spell, Trek had cotton ones with a rather thin pad I like a lot. Bought every one I ever saw. Both. Being cotton and 10 years old, I have to use them sparingly.
Today I went for my 40 mile Cycle Oregon prep ride, my Thursday ritual. 2000' of climbing. almost all in two climbs. Fixed. Forgot my cog wrench so the 13t in my tool bag was useless. I never once thought about my seat, shorts or butt until I got home and started peeling clothes. The soft places are happy. And I did 5 miles plus of pedaling my 43-16 quite fast.
The Under Armours go into my regular wash with jeans etc. No special handling. All synthetic, wear like iron. And that regular wash handles Bag Balm in its sleep. So that was a cool discovery! Another plus of the U As: they keep valuables where they belong; a real benefit under shorts that no longer do.
