The word 'icon' gets used too frequently but in this case the word doesn't go far enough.

his advice was key to learning how to true a wheel such that the wheel was stable and often never needed another week without being cased by a crash or mishap. Pretty great ability to impart his knowledge through the written word. His works certainly upped the game for any mechanics.

Palo Alto is my home town. The name Jobst Brandt is burned into my memory for some reason, although I never met him. I started cycling back in the 70's when I lived in San Jose. I imagine we rode some of the same roads and perhaps even crossed paths a couple of times. I like reading his articles. He was not connected to the bicycle industry, so he could say exactly what he thought. He had a solo accident while riding in 2011 (broke his leg and head injury). I don't think he rode after that. An interesting and outspoken fellow. Sad news......

I should add that the head injury was from a stroke after being hospitalized after his accident....
