I seem to recall that someone from the forum visited Paso Robles for some riding fairly recently. I'm going to be there next Saturday to ride with a friend and I'd welcome any advice on routes. We're hoping to ride 50-60 miles. The guy I'll be riding with is overall very fit and has ridden a century in the past, but he has limited cycling experience and he hasn't been riding regularly as of late. I'd like to find a route that is moderately challenging and without too much traffic. This "friend" is also a client of mine so I don't want to take him out on a ride that's going to demoralize him too much :-)

Another thing you could try. I use Art's cyclery a lot for orders. They are located in San Luis Obispo, which is close to Paso Robles. You might give them a call at 1-800-626-3440. They could probably give some some good tips on where to ride. They have been helpful to me in the past. Good luck.

Hey, Tom. Yup, it was me. Great riding. I was staying with someone that was familiar with the area so I din;t have to do much looking up things in maps. My memory tells me that a goof ride in that range involves heading out on Peachy Canyon, using a couple other roads out at the end of that to bring in miles, but I can't recall the names, something Mine road, Chimney Rock? Then, head back via Adeledia (sp?) . . . great descent.

Have fun!

P.S.

Tom, if you are riding on a Saturday, there will be some traffic. You can't spit in that area without hitting a winery so there will be folks visiting the wineries. My first ride was on a gorgeous Sunday and while there was more traffic than on the weekdays, I didn't think it was bad. The upside, most of the motorists seemed quite aware of cyclists and were, with one exception, very patient and waited for safe passing spots.

Thanks Thinline. Yeah, I've figured the winery traffic could be an issue. We're going to try and ride fairly early so that we're off the road before the drivers have made one too many tasting stops. I've hooked up with a friend of a friend who lives up there and he's working on some route options for us. I'll ask him about Peachy Canyon and the other roads you mentioned. If I have time I'll also take Zootrider's recommendation and call Art's Cyclery. Thanks again to both you.

The riding was great, Thinline. We were only able to ride on Saturday (we had to depart early yesterday so my client could catch his flight out of LAX back to Chicago). Our ride was about 40 miles and 3,100 feet of climbing. I would have loved a little more but it was the perfect ride for my client. We stayed at a friend's house off of River Road between Templeton and Paso Robles so we did a counter-clockwise loop into Paso Robles, up Peachy Canyon to Vineyard Road, Vineyard Road back to Templeton and then we added a loop east of Templeton (Templeton Road, Sooth El Pomar Road, Neal Springs Road and back to River Road if I'm remembering correctly). The weather was perfect and the traffic was light. After our ride we did some tasting at Denner and Villa Creek and then barbecued dinner at my friend's house. All in all a pretty great way to spend a Saturday. I'm already scheming for another opportunity to get back up there for some more riding . . .

Awesome!

I think of those roads, Peachy was the only one we had in common. Fun road, nice climbs and fun descents. Glad you had a nice time. I am hoping to get the invite to return next April for a week.
