I just got an E-mail from my builder.  He has gone over my '73 Raleigh Carlton Competition and:

Added bosses for 3 WB cages
Modified the Huret Driopout to work with modern derailleur B screws
Flowed braze into all the lugs (apparently the paint was holding the bike together)
Repaired the distorted seat lug (at the pin)
Cleaned up the seatpost so a 27.2 post will work
Repaired cracks to the seat lug at the slot and chainstay at the dropout
Has the frame true to 0.005"
Tightened up the fit for the headset cups

He feels the frame is now solid.  It's going to powdercoat tomorrow.  (Black.  It is a Raleigh after all.  He is also going to get me the right 531 decals which I will keep for the day when I decide this is a restoration or  sell it to someone else.  It looks like the rest of the decals are very easy to get, so I am not going to bother.  For now, it is a stealth winter/rain/city bike that just happens to love going off pavement.

The bike will run 7-speed 52-42-26 x ??-28, 135 stem and 160mm setback on the SR MTE-100 post.  (The frame is a 54.  I normally ride a 58-59.  Fit with those bars and stem is right on.)  Mafac Racer front, Weinmann CP rear.  (My preferred brakes for the winter/rain.city bikes.  Tires will be 35?, 38? Pasela.  Fat!  I have some 38 Continental super soft ice tires too.  They will be perfect on this bike.  Not studded, but super grippy and huge.

I'm excited!  This bike is fun!  (And from a different era.  I expect to see riders with sew-ups over their shoulders when I ride it.)

gc, we do. For this one, it is going straight from the framebuilder (TiCycles) to Eric Dungy, I saw a little of his work at the Oregon framebuilder's show a couple of months ago. One of the bikes was stunning. Dave's a pro and deals with pros.

lsd, my 531 stickers were the generation before that Reynolds stopped using 1973.

A fun thought: That frame was really light. Now I know why. That mixture of copper and whatever is heavy stuff! It's gonna be heavier when I get it back.

lsd, that's it! Plus one for the fork. (Now most of my decal was obliterated, but what remained was clearly that one.)

Sweet. I remember my friend had a Peugeot, where they didn't even bother with filling lug gaps with paint. You could stick a tooth pick in there!

Another fun thought: I think I see how Dave was able to get the frame to within 5 mil of being true. They jigged the frame up true then decided not to apply enough heat and brazing to throw it out of kilter!

No, not yet. I doubt I will see it before X-mas. But I am psyched. (And now doubly so. I have always wanted yelllow fenders for my good bike. Every shop I have been in the past 8 years I have looked for yellow road fenders. Asked at many. Googled them. Talked to industry folk. I learned of Krylon Fusion for Plastic spray paint a few weeks ago. Then learned that the first 8 or so outlets I tried (an autoparts chain, a hardware chain, Sears, Home Depot, two paint chains ... either no longer carry it or will not order it. Tried again yesterday. Second try, success! They had one can. I now own it.

Paint wants 7 days to become chip-proof. That's 7 days I need the Carlton for. So, I'm ready!
