So the title pretty well sums it up....just finished my last day of riding in Sanibel. 310 miles in 6 days...my taint hurts.

Most of my rides wer 30-50 miles, but I did sneak in one century (solo). Earliest century I have ever done...and I was hurting at the end. My longest previous ride this year was only 2.5 hours on a trainer.

Now, it bears noting that the almost the entirety of these miles was on the same 11 mile stretch of road from Sanibel out to Captiva. Everyday....out and back in the same road. Sometimes just once, some times twice and sometimes (i.e. The century) it was 4 times. Mind-numbing...but it was flat and a great chance to get some time in my aero position.

After my first ride on Monday, I noted that I had set the 2nd fastest time on a Strava KOM from Captiva to Sanibel and back. Didn't even know there was a segment there and wasn't even trying for it. The existing KOM was 23.7mph for 20 miles. Could be doable....was planning my century for Tuesday, figured a recovery ride for Wednesday and would take a shot at it on Thursday.

Ended up going for the segment on Friday instead...easy ride out to Captiva, turned around and went for it. Head wind on the way back to Sanibel, but I was making good time. By the time I hit the turnaround, I was averaging right about 23.5 - 24mph and I was nice picking up the tailwind. Perfect....actually dialed down my effort a bit and still nabbed the KOM by 2:50. Averaged 25.1 for the 20 miles. Given how early in the year it is, and I didn't have race wheels or a skin suit, I was pretty damn pleased. Probably the only KOM I'll ever get..LOL

Also ran about 10 miles for the week, which is not bad seeing as how I have been fighting plantar fasciitis since December and haven't really run since January during a bad flare-up.

All in all, a good training block that hopefully gives a solid foundation leading up to Madison this year!

nicely done CK!! checked out the ride on map, nice place, looks nice and warm. It's always fun when you are feeling, not pushing too hard, and then you check your strava, and you go whoa......niiice....

this is the best I have felt this early in years, been Mtn Biking with these kids in their twenties, 1/2 my age, got worked last year at this time, decided this year I better bring my "A" game. Love it when they asking if I can turn it down a notch on some of these climbs, and on the descents, this old man still has a few tricks in the bag they have not seen!

Way to go. Out and back four times mind numbing? 2.5 hours on a trainer is mind numbing!!

So when I turn on the terrain feature on google maps when looking at that island, the screen literally DOES NOT CHANGE!
KOM!? Who are you kidding CK?

Glad to hear about the rides. Hope the p.f. calms down.

Nice. It's better to ride the same road repeatedly than the trainer, IMHO.

That KOM is probably for the bridge leading from Captiva back to Sanibel. Think it goes up about 1 foot! ha ha. I remember that road very, very well. We rented a house across from the YOLO store on Captiva and I rode a beach cruiser 20+ miles up and down Sanibel-Captiva Rd. a few years back. Sure, it's dead flat but the wind off the water can really mess with you. I can't even imagine doing that for 100 miles, especially if you had to repeat the same stretch over and over!! I'm hoping the rewards of such mental fortitude came in the shape of multiple pina-coladas at the end of the day. That's the only reason I try to ride or run during a beach vacation.

Wow, what a funny coincidence, CK took the KOM from 6ix and he WAS the guy on a breach cruiser!

Just dawned on me where you were talking about. My dad lives up in Bradenton. I make fun of him. Italian guy, born in Brooklyn, grew up in Long Island, retired to Florida. Checked off all of the boxes. LOL.

That's too funny!!! I don't think I was the guy on the cruiser, but maybe....whatever the case, kudos to CK for doing a freakin' century on such boring roads! And fast, too! After riding the extreme hills here (Asheville, NC), the flat roads of Florida are a welcome reprieve but likely boring after a short time. I swear, I can't find an 'easy' route to save my life. There are no recovery days here unless on the trainer.

Now honest 6ix, were you wearing a wetsuit? That could have provided crucial aero advantage.

Yup, that is the road...the KOM actually starts just at the end of the road that is right along the shore in Captiva, not at the bridge.

I think my total elevation gain for the ride was less than 1000 feet, and that included going over the causeway and back!
