Closed four or six corner crit. What purpose does a moto serve?

I know it's a freak occurrence but is a moto necessary?

There are too many cases of unnecessary vehicles on course that end up precipitating wrecks.

Time for the promotors and officials to put rider safety a bit higher on the priority list.

Night time crits need motos to clear the course of pedestrians and clueless spectators. Even on a short course, too many people need to cross the road at the convenience.
The second video looks like it occurred right after the start.

Not buying the necessity of motor to clear the course.
Crossing guards do that quite efficiently at loads of races.

I think motos get tossed in for dramatic effect, nothing more.

Of all the places to stall! If his moto was not in sound order the driver is culpable.

Let's not also over the "dramatic effect" of racing "brakless track bikes on a short technical coure." That in and of itself is a recepie for disaster....

Running an unreliable moto in front of racing fix gear riders in a narrow hallway? Isn't there a legal term like "gross negligence" that applies here? And wouldn't that overshadow any waivers the riders have signed? And was there any good reason why that moto could not have just stayed on the road to the left for the duration of the hallway.

Buff, the riders know well the risks of crashes. I suspect more than a few of these racers ride velodromes. But completely preventable actions by the race officials?

I have little sympathy for the the race organizers here. Reminds me of the ~1980 Nationals ITT where Alan Kingsbury, a rider I used to watch, got hit by a cement truck while defending his title. (That driver was going to a job on the right of way street and had no idea there was a bike race where the riders were running a stop sign.)

Isn't this the second US race where a stalled moto has caused a completely foreseeable crash? Peter Stetina at the US Pro Challenge in Colorado? I am sure this race was not US Cycling approved. but still - race organizers, get the word out the only moto drivers who can show up on reliable motos need apply.

Ben (great name btw, name of my oldest son),
Any race that involves a 'hallway' seems to put to rest any thought of a gross negligence claim in my humble opinion... But that's just me. I guess what I'm ultimately saying is that this "race" series is nothing more than a glorified demolition derby / xgames doing back flips with snow machines... What could possibly go wrong and what are folks actully there to see?

Sure it's a demolition derby, But still, you don't put a cement truck in the arena.

(I'm an oldest son also.)

Well, I haven't seen a cement truck in one but I have seen a few school busses!

There's no need to motos on closed circuits.

Brakeless bikes on a technical circuit? Double stupid.

The stalled moto is obviously problematic and as said, there's no need for motos on a closed circuit. But the sentence below is telling of the ultimate root cause. Look if you don't have brakes, any type of mishap is going to turn into a CF. On that note, zero sympathy for the crashees. You know what you got yourself into.

"The fixed-gear event in Brooklyn, New York saw dozens of riders hit the deck in multiple pileups across both the men’s and women’s races, with the most extreme crash involving a stalled race moto."

When I raced, and sucked, I would take a flyer during a lull. Nothing like you're moment in the sun, when the motorcycle has to goose the accelerator for ya. And then two laps later it's back to anonymity. LOL.

that crash was crazy, and the dude just sits there. My buddy is the N. America Cinelli rep, he was there, he said it sounded much worse than it looked, and said that was just a fraction of the crashes that night
