Dammit. Haven't been doing a lot of road riding lately, but I got a cargo trailer, and have doing more and more crazy errands with it. Hauling 40-50 lbs worth of stuff. Well, I sprained the crap outta my right elbow, when my manly Milwaukee drill kicked back on me. Wahh!!! N

Bummer about the sprain. I had an air powered 1/2" Snap-On drill that had torque like crazy! It had an option handle to get extra leverage and there was more than one time I regretted not putting it on.

When I had trouble with my elbow, I wore an arm warmer. Not just while riding, but while sleeping too. It seemed to help.

Thanks Smokey for the tip. Yeah, Dale, my optional handle is put away somewhere. To add insult to injury (pun intended) after it kicked back, I "gutted it out" and drilled a few more holes. Ah, the male psyche is maddening sometimes.

Unsolicited advice: if it hurts more than 24 hours, Don't diagnose and manage this on your own.

I broke my left elbow after hitting a dog on a ride a few years back. I waited two days until I saw a doctor. Test was to see if I could rotate my lower arm without pain. If you experience severe pain you probably have a fracture to the radial head. Took 8 weeks to heal, arm in splint. Of course the only way to find out in by xray.

It's been four days. I've gained a lot of motion back. Still some pain at extreme points of motion, but not as bad as before. Unfortunately, I've had trouble with this elbow before. I have a congenital defect in my elbow, where the two forearm bones are partially fused near the elbow. As a result, I have limited rotation of my forearm. When I was younger and my muscles and ligaments were more supple, I could get away with it, but I fear not these days. Once it's totally healed, I'm going to try some physical therapy to get back some range. Surgery to break apart the bones has a spotty record. The only surgery they do is for folks who happen to have their lack of rotation fixed at a bad angle. They mostly just reset the angle. It's nothing you'd notice, but when I put my arms out straight with my elbows pointing down, my left hand is tilted in 45 degrees in, and my right at 90. Thanks for your empathy, and concern. My wife is actually a medical doctor, not an orthopod, um actually a psychiatrist. LOL. But she wouldn't let me ignore a serious medical problem!

Sounds good Nick. I have a problem with my right heel from my running days (bursitis).

After I got on my bike, after my elbow healed, I discovered how much you actually use your upper body in cycling, especially climbing when pulling on the bars..

I know. Not that I "train" anymore. But a few years ago, I realized I couldn't "violently" sprint from the drops due to my elbow. Oh well, what do they say about the alternative to getting older?! LOL.

I got reminded of my age big time last weekend. I have a hernia just starting to make itself felt. Went to a convention I was very involved with for Memorial weekend. Brought shoes that while nearly 10 years old had been seldom worn and sandals recently adopted to a lift for my shorter leg. Both not road tested yet. Convention had me in just-in-time mode for 2 1/2 days. (Walking into my hotel room and leaving 10 minutes later showered and in a different set of clothes, for example.) Exercises? The stairs. Fast feet to the next meeting. Stretches? A quick lean against a wall for hammies and Achilles. Monday afternoon and Tuesday I waked miles; thankfully in running shoes though the new low heel shoes,; not exactly the best for walking and I had a hard rubber lift in one. Tues afternoon, shouldered my pack and walked 5 blocks to the elevated, carry-on in each hand. That was probably the least comfortable 4 hours I have ever spent in a plane.

Got home and the backside of my legs were so tight I could barely bend over and touch my knees. Two days later, I am feeling a lot looser but still a long ways from properly stretched. I am going to try to get out later and put on an easy 30 miles or so on the fix gear. If I can do it, it should help a lot.

Second Nick on the aging bit.

Ben
