I read this morning on a local newspaper site (in NJ, I'm back in the USA) that in a local half marathon on Sunday, a woman runner was knocked down by a buck that burst onto the road, and then stomped on her leg as it leaped away. She recovered from the shock and was able to finish the last 3 miles of the race. She is very sore and has a hoof-shaped bruise on her leg.
The deer are a real menace around here; I'm almost afraid to drive at night, or ride my motorcycle, not to mention that they walk through yards at night, leaving little piles of excrement everywhere. They can't be hunted because they live on little patches of land among developments and shopping centers.
Near my Italian home they have introduced wolves, and there are packs on Monte Grappa, the Asiago Plateau, the pre-alps, and Dolomites. While they do take down deer, they seem to prefer easier prey, like cows (which produce milk for Asiago cheese), sheep, donkeys, and little pet dogs. They are coming close to inhabited areas and people are afraid. On the other hand, while wolf attacks on humans haven't ever happened, people are bitten, maimed, and even killed by "pet" dogs all the time.

Wolves are even making a return in Netherlands of all places. Currently only individuals but the first pack is expected to cross border from Germany next year. Its a migratory trend that's been years in making and started in Poland (or perhaps further east) if memory serves.

Wolves are breeding with coyotes in Canada and the US. They keep Coyote's super stealth and ability to live around humans. But still badass hunters. Google coywolf. Amazing stuff.

Yo Ben, I realized something that might be of interest to you: The deer population of your youth in New England was a small fraction of the current population. Fewer hunters, less hunting habitat, very little predation.

I always find that the worst time of year for driving the roads of Vermont and encountering deer in the road is actually rifle season (coming up in a few weeks).  With the increased human activity in the woods and tracking of deer, the deer begin to move about far more than normal during the season and inevitably are crossing roads seeking safer habitat.  There is a smaller increase in the earlier seasons (bow, bear, turkey etc) but deer rifle is the big one when every hunter is out there in the woods stirring up the deer population.

That screen grab is bizarre.  I didn't realize UFO tractor beams were invisible.

thin, maybe the deer are seeking the safety of the roads. They are off limits there, aren't they. Yes, getting hit by a car is usually fatal but at least the drivers are doing their best to miss!
