I always find that the worst time of year for driving the roads of Vermont and encountering deer in the road is actually rifle season (coming up in a few weeks).  With the increased human activity in the woods and tracking of deer, the deer begin to move about far more than normal during the season and inevitably are crossing roads seeking safer habitat.  There is a smaller increase in the earlier seasons (bow, bear, turkey etc) but deer rifle is the big one when every hunter is out there in the woods stirring up the deer population.
