Your experience sounds very similar to mine. I've started getting up very early and heading inland to where I can find the most shade and least exposed roads. Seems to be the solution for me.

NO NO NO!!! DO NOT avoid sunscreen altogether because oxybenzone is an issue. Pieces of your nose and face removed, or melanoma (you will die) are not worth it.
And while I am ranting, the Euros, as usual, are way ahead of the US on sunscreen, with requirements for better prevention of both skin cancer (US OK there) and photo aging (US not so good).
