I was riding solo along a nice new paved road out from town. Nice sunny day, light traffic. Just rolling along and whoosh about 10 guys go past me on motorcycles doing well over 100.
Some moved to the center line. some stay pretty much in the center of the lane. Small gap and about 8 more guys go by, chasing the other 10. Another gap 3 more. Another small gap and 3 more. These guys are really flying trying to get back on. Another gap. Single guy. Another gap another single guy.
Talk about holding your line. I've never riding in that straight of a line in my life. My cheeks stayed clinched for the next 30 min. I couldn't even begin to think about turning my head to see if more were coming. Just ride straight. No sudden movements. A guy doing 100 mph within 3 feet of me, holy crap.
Must have taken about 30 seconds , but it seemed like 20 min of pure out and out fear.

Had a two column formation of Harleys 8 or 10 long pass me within inches the other day riding around a bend on a narrow country road. Less speed, but more noise. Almost jumped out of my skin.

I dont get surprised by too many cars or bikes much - not since I put the mirror on my handlebars. Looks a little fugly, but it does increase my awareness of whats coming from behind me. Ok if something is approaching at 100mph not much is gonna help

Yeah, those motos...using cyclists as pylons for their wanna-be road races. We have a few roads around here that are favorites for faux moto racing - and also happen to be great cycling roads. Sometimes they clash but I haven't heard of any crashes - yet. I'd say the worst is when a club of 50+ riders decides to do one of these winding roads and they take several minutes to pass by - and they stink quite a bit.
A mirror helps a lot when traffic is sketchy - I can see all behind and how much is left to go by. I use an eyeglass mirror and it has a much higher vantage point than a handle bar mirror so can see more.
