The camera angle isn't helping things but it's a LOT better than the SRAM Red Hydraulic brifters. It's sad. I was really hoping that disc brakes on road bikes were just going to be a fad. Guess not.

A friend of mine just won his first cross race of the season on the new Giant TCR disc cross bike. Red hydraulic brakes. He said he was able to brake later that rim brake guys which helped him win.

I have had terrible luck with avid hydraulic brakes. I would hate to have my entire bike incapacitated because my China brakes won't take a bleed. Thinking the shimano would be way better. Definite advantage in performance though

I hear you jrt. I ditched all my Avid brakes. I got OK at bleeding them with the pro kit but I had to bleed them every three or four months. Shimano are simpler to bleed and don't need it very often.

I just don't get them at all. To me braking is way more about the pad and rim materials than the method used to push the pad to the rim. Why add more when less will do?

Right on Ride On. I dont get it either. Maybe the feel is better. But the hydraulic activation is lost on me. Then again I also like mechanical discs better too.

cable actuated disc are kinda on the sucky once go hydraulic. more powerful and you can modulate, haven't encountered these road levers but with the mtb its no comparison

The limiting factor in braking has and will always be the tire. As narrow as road tires are, I just don't see where having additional braking power/modulation is necessary. A locked up wheel is a locked up wheel.

Manufacturers have to have something new to sell to everyone. The bikes people are buying are too nice and are lasting too long. So we now have planned obsolescence through marketing hype of the next great bike technology. Same thing with the 650B MTB standard. Everyone ditch their outdated 26 and 29er bikes.

In defense of fugly hydraulic brifters - ALL current brifters are ugly compared to the elegant Campy brake levers of the 70s. I suspect we'll get used to this too if they work well.
