Did a local century today.....the Sub-5 Hour Century Challenge. Title is self-explanatory.

We had 20 guys for our team. The course is 3 laps of a 33 mile course. After every lap, we came in for food and water. You obviously want to keep these stops as short as possible.

I have very few miles in my legs due I extensive travel....Miami, Las Vegas, RI, Minneapolis and Taiwan all in the last few weeks. Doing a fast century was not high on my priority list!! Scenic e I got back from Taiwan last Friday, I crammed 200 miles in to try and "wake up" my fitness from earlier in the year.

Get out to the course this AM and the wind is BRUTAL....20-25 mph coming out of the NE, which meant it would be a headwind fr the last half of the course. Our goal was 4 1/2 hours, but I was thinking that was gonna be tough 'cuz of the wind. My plan was simple....take my turns on the first lap, sit in on the second and hang on as long as I could for the last lap and limp home.

We get going and we are FLYING....guys were ready to roll. I'm looking at my wattage and just thinking "uh-oh." Taking my pulls on the head / crosswind sections were tough. I execute my plan and surprisingly made it to the end with the front group (even though I pretty much just sucked wheels for 60 miles). We finished in 4:19 actual time and 4:12 ride time. Averaged 23 MPH for the whole ride and 24 mph for ride time. Our group was still pretty big in the last 5 miles when one of our guys threw the hammer down. We ended up with about 8 guys at the finish.

Even though I WS just riding wheels, I was still surprised I could make it to the end. What scares the cr@p outta me is that the distance and wattage would be similar to what I would need to do for a full IM bike leg in ~5 hours. And then run a marathon? Hmmmmm....may have to reassess that particular goal!!!

Anyway, the ride benefits Parkinson's research, and they raised over $100K from the ride, so that is all good.

Sounds like an awesome time.

I opted for gardening instead of riding the WHistler GF plus return with my buddy. The weekend rest was needed, feeling much better now than I did on Friday. Crazy work weeks put me in the doldrums.

Robbie Ventura had a bunch if his teams / groups out there. Their "A" team was ROLLING. 2 guys finished off the front in 3:45!!! Not certain how far out they went by themselves, though....

he didn't say, but here's what he posted to FB: I finished 100mi in 4hrs 46min and 50sec. What a well organized and well run event. I met a lot of great riders and had a lot of help hitting this goal. I broke a spoke, almost broke my toe, fought a 15 to 20mph head wind and can't recommend this ride enough.

Hard to believe that a 175k ride with 2600 meters of climbing is an easy stage in a grand tour.
