This Weekend a 20 Year old local woman struck and killed two participants in the Seacoast Century - an annual event here in NH.

What makes the tragedy even worse is the fact that she had been caught speeding at twice the limit (59 in a 30 zone) in the same spot just a few hours earlier and was then found to never have been licensed. The maddening thing is that she was sent home with a friend after the speeding incident - I kid you not. People go to jail for shoplifting, but a menace like this is left to walk free when she is a clear danger to society; as she demonstrated almost immediately. Apparently she would have been arrested on the spot if she had driven with a revoked or suspended license; so it appears that the law leaves more than a little desired.

The accident occurred when she crossed the lanes and hit the cyclists head on - implying that she was driving distracted, under the influence or both.

I normally stay well away from the road where this accident occurred, way too much traffic from beachgoers, but it is well liked by cyclists that want to stay away from hills.

Put the criminal in stocks, by the side of the road at the accident scene, for 8 hours at a time as part of the punishment she will get, which is likely not to be sufficient.

And investigate the cop that let her go, too.

And to think your car gets the boot if you have outstanding parking tickets. I'd cite the officer as well.

I heard about that incident while riding at lunch today. That's really awful. The driver should definitely do jail time but we'll see. I don't know what to think of the cop. Perhaps he had no discretion to take her into custody. Odd that driving with a suspended or revoked license is worse than driving without ever having obtained one. I can se the "reasoning" behind it, that under one scenario you have proven that you don't deserve to drive and the other you have not yet . . . but still . . . broke the law by speeding and having no license.

In cases where a driver does something that threatens, but ulitmately does not harm a cyclist, I have always thought an apt punishment would be suspending the license and requiring the motorist to then commute everywhere on a bicycle for some period of time, a month or so. I suspect they would gain a new appreciation of what it's like to be on the road and unprotected by anything other than your wits.
