UGH. FTP came out at a measly 207w. Seriously?

Now, admitedly, I haven't ridden at ALL this fall because of the heel injury. Probably have less than 10 rides leading up to the FTP test, but still....

At the end of my base period last year I hit 240 and hadn't yet started any intensity....now I'm at 207.

Tested with a bunch of guys from the training center also doing Madison. Avg wattage for the group was 267.

I really need to fight the urge to start getting after it, though. Madison is 9 months away. I don't need to be hitting it hard right now. Just need to rebuild my base between now and March, before my structured training program starts.

But it was a rude wake-up call!!

Hmm, I agree that your heel injury attributed considerably. Was your mind ready for the test? Have you been focusing a lot more on running and swimming since your last test? Could have simply been an "off" day too.

6 years ago I was sitting at about 142 lbs and my FTP topped out at 327 average for 20-minutes. Now I'm 30 lbs heavier (though I did manage to lose over 35 lbs since this past April) and can only manage 259 average for 20-minutes. Yikes!! Either I'm extremely weak now or I was very strong back then.

I guess age is starting to become very visible now. Need EPO.

OK, just downloaded my data and it is a wee bit better than I thought. Avg. wattage for 30' was 217 and 223 for 20'. Previous data (207w) was based on the Computrainer numbers, not my PowerTap.

Still kinda sucky....but not AS sucky as I previously thought.

OK, some redemption was had this morning.

Wasn't planning on testing, but others were when I went in to the training center today. I had not ridden since Sunday, which ended a big block of training for me. Figured I was rested and recovered, so testing was a good option.

Hit 234w according to the Computrainer, which I was pretty damn pleased with. Had hoped to hit 230w, so to end up above it was a bonus. Plus I started out too fast and was definitely fading at the end. If I had paced myself better, I may have been able to up the numbers a bit.

The big surprise was when I just downloaded the data....245w according to my PowerTap (which I trust much more than the CT numbers). SO not only is that a big increase from my previous, sucky 217w, but it is also 5w higher than my test from April last year (when I had WAY more miles in my legs). To be fair though, I have been doing higher intensity rides this year than I did last year, so that obviously has played a role.

So all in all, not too shabby for an early March test result. I'd love to get up around 275 this year (never been up that high...previous best was around 250).

Right now, 153....puts me right about 3.5w / kg. Was 155 for previous test. Race weight *should* be around 148-150.

I wish we could merge this thread with Ben's thread from yesterday about the VN training article....lots of cross-over, IMO. The reality is that I suck at short, high wattage efforts. But I can ride a high percentage of that FTP all freakin' day long.....see thread from last year about the Sub-5 Hour Century Challenge.

So there are a lot of guys I train with who are real watt monsters....but I don't really worry too much about it because I know, for the type of rides / training I need, I'll be right there with them (or ahead!) at the end of a long ride.

As proof of my high wattage suckiness, the Power Profile in my WKO / Training Peaks software doesn't even register results for me @ 5" and 1' intensity levels. I don't even make their chart!!! Hell, even for the 5' and 20' levels, I barely rank as a Cat. 4 level rider.....

All of which shows why we have the actual race instead of just comparing numbers on a spreadsheet.
