Don't know why I still receive this rag as I haven't subscribed to it in YEARS... Cover article is, "Leaner, Stronger, Faster" - have they used that hook line 1,000 times yet? Is it just me, or is Bicycling the Esquire or GQ of cycling magazines? I wish to hell I knew how to get off of the mailing list as I feel bad from the tree that had to die in order to become tripe.

To their credit they are still around. Even though they are giving it away, evidently.
BTW, how do I get leaner, stronger, faster?

They did have an excellent human interest story on Rob and Tract Lea and raising their challenged kid, now in his 20s. They were clubmates of mine in NEBC, marrying while I was there. I didn't know them well, but good people; salt of the earth. I contacted Bicycling and they out us in touch. I may get to see them this summer. Pretty cool.

It has it's audience. Not most of us though. Bicycling reminds me of the Monty Python sketch about the kids show where they learn how to play the flute and other things. Well first you blow in this end and move your fingers on these holes. Neat. Wow. Super. http://youtu.be/tNfGyIW7aHM

They just need to do a cover shoot with Pauline Gretzky on a bike like Golf Digest did with her swinging a golf club , I'm in then. Circulation would be way up.

we're not really their target audience. they are all about new riders that don't know anything. that said they do have at least one good article per edition. they are also doing a contest to see who can write like bill strickland which i think is funny because imho i think he's a pretty terrible writer. the buyer's guide is horrible. how many ways can you say 'horizontally rigid yet vertically compliant'. funny, bicycling and adventure cyclist are the only two bike mags i subscribe to. it's good bathroom reading.

Once you've read six issues you've read them all and after you've ridden for more than a year or so it ceases to be relevant

should all this complaining not be properly filed under the "getting old" thread?

I peruse an issue every couple of years just to reassure myself that I'm not missing anything by not subscribing. I agree that we're not their target audience.

It's a freebie with LAB membership. I wouldn't subscribe, but I take a look at them before tossing. The forum is huge and overwhelming - quite scary. I haven't checked it for a few years.

I think the Performance Team Member gets you a subscription? But then again, I don't get it anymore for free. I think my membership is up to date? Who knows? I had a friend in the magazine biz, and he told me that basically most special interest magazines recycle there stories periodically (get it?), as people don't typically subscribe for years on end. These Interwebs just went ahead and changed everything, I reckon'.

every so often they have a good article about interesting bike-related stuff. There was an article on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, its role in the war and how the bike plays a role in Vietnamese society todaY. Was actually very interesting.

Not liking a lot of their bike-related reviews -- Example there's a page "article" on "Their favorite helmets" not one of them is a MIPS helmet. Irresponsible and out of touch -- especially since it was in their very magazine last year that they went into such depth about MIPS and other new technologies for helmets. Just weird....

The mag has never been the same since they dumped Ed Pevelka and Fred Matheny. Really dumb move.

i guess there's only so much to write about to fill a magazine for years. most people get their racing results online. they do have some good writers (or good articles they get elsewhere) that make it worth it to me. but they could get rid of the advertising and training/eating/buying tips and there would be a solid 5 pages of stuff to read.
