I am glad someone dug into this. It needs to put out there.

From ‘Reading the Race: Bike Racing from Inside the Peloton’ by Jamie Smith with Chris Horner.

Gilbert and Sanchez must have been reading the part about the faux attack before AGR.

Sanchez on right drawing competition that way. Then Gilbert on left, inside turn attack.

Now we can say it was "textbook".

Well I'll be damned; I was subjected to a textbook attack and survived.

I first caught her at UBC, didn't think much of it and didn't look back; then as we entered Southlands she came screaming by me catching me off guard (I was on snooze time). OK, game on, gear up, latch on. The way she was going, all business going fast, no smiles I figure she must be a racer, about half my age. Big ring up the Southlands hill she puts in a few little digs. Hehe.

Then I find myself leading the pace heading up Airport Bridge which slowly turns right from crosswind to headwind. The textbook part on her end is to let me burn out in the wind and then when the pace drops, put in a big dig right before the crest of the bridge and hope it sticks. Except I saw it coming and had picked the proper gear to respond, gritting teeth, latch back on again, not enough power difference in the wind to unglue me despite that non-aero helmet and wooden wheels trying to hold me back (not to speak of that cheepo clonker of a Trek that is my winter horse).

That's where our ways parted unfortunately, I liked the way she played. This is what makes road riding so much fun. I was going to start heading into the bigger hills next week but I kinda like the amount of game that is to be found at UBC so may stick around a little longer.
