Out in Scottsdale for a few days on business....sent my bike out to get some good miles in and actually ride in the warmth.

NOT. Weather yesterday was complete cr@p. 65* when I left, building wind and grey skies. Doing a 65 mile ride around McDowell mountain....started off with a tailwind. First bad sign....

Zipping along, doing just fine. A little chilly, but happened to have brought arm warmers, so I was basically OK (although a base layer would have helped). Some nice little rollers, but nothing too strenuous.

Around the backside of McDowell, it starts to rain. Nothing too bad, but it brought a chill with it. I them have to turn left to start heading back south and everything bottoms out.

As I make the left! I am now heading straight into the wind! which has picked up to 20mph+ with gusts even stronger (over 30). I look up the road and it is dead straight as far as you can see.....and all uphill. Nothing steep...only about 2%, but with the wind it was brutal. I am grinding along for all I have @ 12-13mph. Then it rains harder.....then it hails. And the top is not getting any closer.

Turns out, it was a 9 MILE CLIMB into that freakin' headwind. Gusts came up that damn near stopped me on the bike. I was cold and wet and cramping from grinding along, but couldn't stand to stretch because it was so damn windy.

Finally got to the top, but even the descent was brutal because I still had the damn headwind. Just endless.....

Ended up with 67 miles and about 3K feet in climbing ..which back in the day would have been OK, but flatland Chicago boy paid for it!!

Now I can't stop eating.....I have been pounding down food and still find myself hungry shortly after finishing a meal. Debating having room service deliver the bread pudding now....

Visited Phoenix during March one year with bike. 40 degrees and rain for 3 days straight. The locals loved it - a sustained break from that boring sunny warm weather.

that is the ride that makes you tough, the weather did you a favor. Had a similar situation once and I ended up at a Hardees drive thru ordering Frisco burgers just to get home. At least you made it home before dark

"...started off with a tailwind."

Obviously some newbie hacked CK's account.

LOL, Dale.... I knew that I was gonna be facing a strengthening wind coming back, but based on forecasts, thought I would beat the worst of it, but it came in faster than expected. And while I usually plan to come back with a tailwind, sometimes you gotta do the opposite. You don't get to choose which way the wind blows in race day!!

And believe me....I was going through the whole "mental strength building" mantra when I was groveling along. I just didn't need THAT much mental building!

Here is the ride if anyone is interested. I had about a 6 mile ride to get out to the ride, bringing my total up to 67.

These are the rides to remember. Had a similar experience last winter with a 15 degree drop in temperature from short sleeve weather to wet snow/hail/rain. Shaking so much on downhills it was hard to control the bike.

Personally I prefer tailwind first, I am a diesel that needs to properly warm up. You just need to know not to go crazy :-)

Reminds me of Cape Cod rides, Orleans out to Provincetown and back. Not the chill, but the wind. Headwinds and uphill both ways: not fair! But still, quite worth the ride.

Gawd. Reminds me of riding by the municipal airport on the west mesa near Albuquerque. You can get a side gust and have to lean into it to not fall over, turning your head and squinting your eyes while getting sand blasted.
