Just thought I would start a thread to see who has migrated. Please check in if you have. To the Velonation members, there may a number of us coming over from the Velonews board due to an unmanageable amount of Spam on the board. Rest assured.....we come in peace!! We hope you don't mind our arrival.

LOL!! Hopefully everyone else gets their posting issues resolved. Sounds like there was some progress this AM.

Doesn't seem like anyone has posted in these forums for quite awhile. Didn't see any posts from 2013.

No worries, we're glad to have all of you on board! I'm manually assigning the permissions to post here, so new users might have a delay, but if anyone wants to send me an email as support@ our domain, I might get to you a bit faster. To avoid SPAM, it's probably best to keep it that way - at least for now.

Thanks again for the support everyone!

@bobswire - try this link to update your pic

http://www.velonation.com/My-Profile/Profile-Settings.aspx

I'll do some reorganizing over the weekend to make things easier for everyone to work with - we had written off the forums so it needs some work and there are other features that should probably be removed.

Thanks!

Steve,

Thanks for having us.

FYI - we had it down to two Forum sub-categories: Everything and then Everything Lance. If you don't need all of these existing categories neither do we.

My experience is that they can get too fragmented and are rarely, if ever, used.

How about an Off-Topic section for talking about music, motorcycles and general mayhem?

I forgot I joined in Nov 2010. Amazing that I remembered my password.
Last weekend was beautiful for riding, but more beautiful for cleaning and staining the back deck. Maybe I could have done both, but I didn't want to sleep on the couch.

Steve,
Thanks for helping with the migration. Does your forum have provision for sending private messages to individual members?
Also, is VeloNation a UK site? The timestamp and news articles with "s" instead of "zed" give that impression.

Hi Steve Many thanks for getting us refugees into the OK Corral in such short order. One question, is it possible to make the list under "latest forums posts" (to right of screen) longer and to order that list (top to bottom) according to latest replies? That would make it real quick to see which posts are "hot" without having to navigate into the different categories. Cheers Jos

@ geosurf: Naah, she's a mutt, scion of two mutts, themselves well-placed within a mutt lineage. But definitely some aussie, some border collie, and even, based on behaviors, some lab and maybe german shepherd as well. And she's got a wicked sense of humor, in that she brings our neighbor all our socks, and bring us all his bandanas.

Pictures we need to decorate the new home: Stronz's bike, red skinsuit guy, anything else?

I feel sorry for Velonews. Been there for a long time. Hope to enjoy this site as much.

Thanks to the powers that be for letting us migrate. Someone should organize a virtual group ride this weekend to celebrate our new home. Hell, I'll bake cookies!

Rachel,go back to your profile page then click your mouse over the blank avatar and it should take you to a larger blank avatar, once there click  "change" ,then it should give you a place to upload a pic from your desktop.

Anyone who has updated your avatar....in my preferences page, there is no blank avatar to click on, similar to what Rachel first said earlier. There IS a line for "Avatar" but clicking around that area does not give me a "change" option. Help please from those who have been successful. I am using IE, maybe that is the problem....

RNDDUDE, I had the same problem. I saved a copy of the .jpeg file to my desktop, and renamed it with a .jpg suffix. They both work the same as far as opening the picture, but for some reason, the software here does not recognize the .jpeg suffix.

Hope that helps.

Man,
was just going through the velonation community section.
Velonews refugees are 17 pages deep. 120 members have made the jump so far. Almost all names that I recognize as 'regular' posters from over there too.

So much for velonews being down to only a 'handful' of regular posters.

TV and RNDDUDE, I'll bet the software is old and only recognized the first 3 letters of the file type. It sees .jpe and says "I never saw that before!"

And CERV, we all know that we are, for the vast majority of us, highly irregular people. (For one, most of us own multi thousand $$ bicycles. Regular folk don't.) So, by that definition, the only regular posters at Velonews are those Chinese spammers. (I'm guessing band member, flicker and the other hangers on are as irregular as we are with regard to bicycles.)

keeping it manual -- good idea steve. thanks again for providing sanctuary for us refugees; much nicer forum software. just a thought... a read-only FAQ section so folks understand the sign-up process (e.g. approval latency due to spam protection manual method etc.), rules of the road, etc. BTW, i think many of us encountered a technical error message upon signup that didn't really affect the signup but made us question whether our registration took or not. anyway, i know we've swamped you, so thanks again for being such a gracious host.

My sense is that VeloNews is happy with their Facebook-related comments on articles feature, and that the forum was not meeting their needs. I like Zinn articles, for instance, and there are always lots of comments on what he writes.

@geosurf - sorry, no "Dr. Dre Beats or China Jerseys" ... I'll keep my eyes peeled for you...

@Entheo - thanks, I'll work something out for an FAQ - with respect to the "Rules of the Road", I'm thinking of starting a thread on that so we can discuss and come up with some simple guidelines together. I don't think it should be too complicated, but I'd appreciate feedback from those with insight here if you don't mind. You have all seen the problems on the boards in the past, and if we can set this up for success from the start I think it will be in all of our best interests.

Thanks,

Unfortunately this has been Velo's trajectory for a long time. Sorry to see the decay. Feels odd to suddenly move to a new site and establish the community here. And what of the regulars that were here first. I hope we all get along.

I live next door to the town where Velonews was founded and know Barbara and Bob George, so I take no pleasure in seeing what Velonews has become. The sorry state of their forum is a symptom of the decline in the magazine.

Hey, all. I looked at the old VN forum this AM and is is just as Keith and others described. Not sure I'll bother to look again. Kinda like gawking at a roadside accident.

I'm still unsure as how to post pics and make live links. Can anyone fill em in or link to a tutorial?

I pretty much gave up on the VN forum because of those characters. Not from dudgeon so much as boredom, and the sense of being hit on the back of the head over and over with a plastic hammer. Not to make this nice new location "about" them, but isn't it inevitable that they'll show up here too? At least once the elation of having the old one all to themselves has worn off?

I've been dissing Velonews, but like Terrapin and others, I find its decline sad. When I was racing, Velonews was the only source for racing news. I never subscribed, but I did devour every copy that crossed my path. I didn't know the Georges, but we all knew of them. Charles Pelkey twice E-mailed me with information. There was a real passion for bike racing. It wasn't about the bottom line or stockholders And for years, virtually all the regulars on the forum were passionate about riding. There were some real differences, but when it came down to what was important, we all got on our bikes. And that included the Velonews management.

There is still passion among those who work at Velonew but I bet they see (and struggle with) the same disinterest at teh top.

For me its always been about the inhabitants, not so much the house; then again I never had the long history with VN.

But this begs the question, how can we help Steve out creating (maintaining) that same sense of community here and also, help achieve Velonation's vision and objectives.

I think it's clear that VN is putting their eggs in the facebook basket. Nothing but spam on the forum. Articles, however, have a lot of facebook responses. Getting with the times, I guess, and, really, why would they care about a bunch of old-timer cyclists bitching about various things!?!?!

Driving in China's cities (or more accurately...being driven) is one of the most hair-raising driving experiences I have ever had. Traffic signals and controls are mere window dressing, it is all about putting your car in a place where another driver wants to be, and ultimately someone yields, at the last possible moment. And your horn is your best friend. Totally surreal, but my Chinese friends claim that this is nothing compared to Thailand. I am actually about 120 clicks inland of Xiamen, incredibly green and beautiful. The pace of building is insane, high-rise apartments (30+ stories) are going up everywhere as fast as they can build them.

If you're wondering about those who didn't make the migration, read some of the reader comments below Velonews stories and look for a poster with the Facebook name of "Sergio Sergio"

Three guesses who that is, and if it takes you more than once you've not been paying attention to that annoying sycophant's writing style.

This is a little test of the potential for "threaded" replies.  I chose to reply to entheo's post who in turn had quoted Dale's post.  It'd be cool if my reply gets indented so as to make it obvious I had replied to his post without having to quote it.

I was disappointed that I could not alter the Subject line which appears to be fixed as a reply to the original topic post.  Too bad.

Let's see what happens ...

Nope.  Didn't work as my reply to his post just gets added to the heap.  Too bad.  I really miss the "threaded" view feature offered on one of the earlier iterations of the Velonews forum software.  I've never seen it anywhere else and I found it to be really handy in following thread drift as replies were indented using an outline format.

Looks like using the "Quote" feature is as close as we can get.

Well, there you have it. As many have surmised, the forum was viewed by VN as their bastard child, and with almost everyone leaving, including the moderators, that was the final piece in the puzzle that allowed them to kill it off. Too bad in a way, I spent many an hour there and learned a lot. Thanks to those here that pushed for an exodus BEFORE they killed it off. The only thing that I am nervous about is the possibility of the 'gang of four' showing up here now that their sandbox has been emptied....
