We just went from wildfire weather to winter in one week - no fall, except for the leaves.

I had a deer cross in front of me pretty close a couple of years ago inside Portland's city limits. An area of 50-100 year old houses with woods not far off. I wasn't really surprised as I would be passing it on the other side of a not especially wide old road with a high stone wall trapping the deer. Still, those critters go from stock still to full on like a rocket!

Ben, you have endured some hardships we all respect, but I suspect you have lead a charmed life, at least in terms of Bambi trying to kill or maim you. This post is from the other half, with bits of metal in me thanks to Bambi. Here in the east the rut (breeding season) is in full swing. Basically 100k kamikazee Bambis driven by hormone would love to kill anyone on two wheels now right now. It's better for bicyclists thanks to slower speeds, but on a downhill with 15% grades without body armor . . . no, just no.

What I witnessed was a mid-summer doe (I think) without kids. I've seen a few others, both bucks and does with fawn but never in rut. Maybe it's safer out here with fewer deer and more hunters and other armed men. Maybe a few more furry predators. Different species with a lower sex drive? I don't think it is just me as I haven't heard those stories in the 40 years I've lived out here. Or perhaps it is just that I live close enough to a major city that I don't see what you do.

A friend in our cycling club at work a few years ago was zooming downhill in Harriman Park in NY when a deer crossed in front of him. He started to brake but a second deer crashed into him. He got so hurt he had to stop cycling. (OC - Kaarlo is from the Netherlands too.)

Moving into winter riding. I don't do road because of the salt. Changing to off-road on trails. Stewart in Orange County, NY has great trails.

Stupid me got a message from a buddy that I used to be on the same team with. I'd moved on to another squad closer to home and 100% focused on cyclocross that's since disbanded. Not racing much now, busy with other stuff and COVID-19 sort of took the wind out of the racing sails. Anyway the conversation went something like this. "Hey, haven't seen you this year. 'Sup?" ...blah, blah, blah until he comes to the point, which is they're locked in a points battle with another team for the border wars CX point series and need a few more points that, if I don't come completely unraveled, I could secure for them. Stupid me? ---> I renewed my USAC racing license, put down my former team as my team for this season, dug up an old jersey, and told him I'd race this coming Saturday in Kansas City. The temp range is a low of 18* to a high of 33* (-7 to +1 for OC's benefit). And of course they have the Masters go off at the crack of dawn.

It’s still solidly leave mush soupy season and will remain so for most of winter. Good luck with that Dale. I had a somewhat relaxed 71 k ride just now. Only 44 miles but hey it’s off-season. Just don’t get that heart rate up.
