It's a nice ride to begin with, about 40k of climbing. Add in some thunderstorms, hail, rain and wicked winds and me thinking I could wing it in short sleeves (all useful gear left in car - check!), and things got interesting. Started the day feeling like I'd been hit by a freight train. Clearly the lack of training meant zero recovery from yesterday. Godawful slow on the first 14 miles, the second half was much better and with the adrenaline of the inclement weather kicking in I never felt the altitude. In Leadville now. Tomorrow, single Independence Pass or a double (Twin Lakes - Aspen return)? We'll see.

The mountain might get me but the law never will.

Indy isn't steep but more unbelievable vistas. Enjoy!

Epic conditions, OC. Nice that you found some shelter.

Them were some wicked looking clouds. +1 on finding the shelter from the storm. Great pics!

The pictures are beautiful and the ride looked like a slice of heaven...even the rain.

Well Done. Good luck with Independence. Might as well go to twin lakes, as that side is not a bad climb.

So it was fun... until it wasn't. Nice pics.

Do both sides of Independence, you only live once. Hell, you can ride all the way up to Maroon Bells. If you do, see if you can figure out what all those people are doing riding in the middle of the day on a work day. It's downright creepy. They can't all be tourists like yourself.

Decided to make it an easy day (lets call it my rest day) and do single ascent of Independence out of Leadville, only 1600m of climbing and 123k return. Wanted to check out Aspen but can't affort to lose that $$$$ rental bike. Same reason as why I had to find shelter from the storm

Killer pics!!! That pic above your portrait is unreal....(I LOVE Colorado). To bad I'm in Boulder painting in the HeAt ( I HATE Colorado). Glad you found shelter...that was a hell of a storm Hwy 24 Manitou Springs mud slid flash flood. Be safe.

Chinook - I found a specimen on top of Independence that was doing a mid-day mid-week training ride (double ascent). When I told him that was my original plan but was only doing single he smirked and said something along lines of "that probably when you saw the hill, right?" LOL. The heat and long drag back to Leadville on the plain was the toughest part of today and almost killed me. Shiters.
