I hadn't seen this one on any list and only came across it late last night, 3rd highest pass in Colorado I believe. Perfect choice, the rental is a Roubaix after all. 14 miles of dirt climbing fun. Other than the dirt not a very difficult climb. I was feeling suprisingly good after 3 days in the saddle (seemed like a bit of a breakthrough today finally being back to where I was with my June training) and managed to make it a speedy one. Good thing, cause by the time I got closer to the alpine, dark clouds started looming again. Had parked the car up top and started with descend to Taylor Reservoir, wicked fun ripping down the packed dirt, really well maintained, only a few small ruts and bumps. The only hickup was that I forgot to take off my kakis before heading down so looked a little dorky today but the extra padding was maybe useful. Once at the top, put the bike in car and hiked up another 1000' to the nearby vantage point. Perfect spot to hang out and take in the surrounding 14,000ers. Of course that is when the first bang of thunder made its appearance and it was time to scuttle down to the car. All hell broke lose on the drive down and some fellows cyclists who started too late got caught (but looked to have support). I found the perfect shelter from the storm, Cottonwood hot springs to spend the rest of the afternoon.
