Putting upright old skool bars on my commuter bike. Need longer cables. For the twist grip shifter you need to take them apart to thread the cable. I feel a retro grouch moment coming on.

you can't wear those shifters out. i've got a 10 year old set of 9 speed grip shifts i quit using just because everything else wore out.

Well it's nice to know they last. I'm keeping an ancient steel mountain bike going and had to track down a seven speed trigger shifter.

The "three speed" type bars will be good for the three mile ride in street clothes and glasses.

nick, get a paul's adapter, and use a SRAM bar end shifter, works great, but, you can find seven speed shifters, but the quality is low, I have done this option a few times on older bikes when I was at the shop.

Gonzo: Thanks for the tip. I think with that particular all steel, no suspension mountain bike, the next major thing wrong spells the end. LOL. Turns out, on the Sram shifter, you don't really have to "take it apart", as much as pop off some plastic cover. I'm starting to feel like the car mechanic that doesn't know how to work on anything that doesn't have a carburetor. LOL. Eh, that's not true, I just dive in like an idiot.

ha ha ha, no, you can rethread the shifter, but sometimes it's a hassle, or the plastic stuff starts falling apart, I did see SRAM 7 speed grip shifters on BTI's website, your local shop in Albq. can order it, get it in a couple days.
I hear ya, you should hear me gripe when I hear of another BB standard, or buy a bike with something totally different, and I need new tools, etc.....sheesh, give me a good white bros. old school square tapered BB any day!! But the new Race Face stuff works pretty nice
