+$4K for the disc brake / power meter grouppo. Um, yeah....fook that. I just got onto 11 spd within the last 6 months....I sure as hell am notdropping +$4K to get 12 speed.
However I will start scouring the web d=for blowouts on eTap 11spd HRD systems....while my Ultegra disc brake / mechanical stuff is perfectly servicable and functional, I am not a fan of the large brake hoods.
Similarly, I may want to go wireless on my TT sled.... |

Hahaha. That's all.
My existing bikes will continue to service me for a couple more years. $4k is about the upset price for me for an entire bike setup
Moneys will flow to ride experiences, not hardware, although this also falls in the out of shape affluent guys trying to buy or hold onto coolness category. Just different. |

I just read the VN article. Interesting. Of course my little mind likes to have fun with the details. 13 tooth max jumps in front? Well, I've got a 14 going from my middle to inner but the outer to middle has never been more than 12, now 11, with 53 (or so) - 42, for the past 45 years (after I graduated from my 1967 52-36 compact 10-speed!)

The dropper post - put the battery in front so we can get our toolbags on. (Yes styling becomes a challenge.) And fun - my Avocet post was a wireless dropper post. Dropped the seat ~42". (Not perfect - I had to pull it up by hand and put it in my pocket.)
The (well ridden) chain and cassette picture on the VN site - looks like it came off a Ross; something I would deal with in my volunteer days. (Well at least until I counted the cogs.)
Seriously - that looks very well thought out. The automatic shifting to maintain cadence is brilliant though it would drive me nuts. Now, the compensating shifts to stay in the same gear or close doing front shifts - wow! And straight block 10 to 17 (15 with the biggest cog) I also like. I've been doing similar for years with my 9-speed except I start at 12 and leave out the 2nd smallest cog to add one more tight jump at 16 or 18. (PNW hills, the 12 is very useful but I don't spend time in fast groups on the flat. Don't need a 13. And 9-speed; I have to make sacrifice.s  )
The VN writer comments that he likes that SRAM seems to have listened to the feedback and addressed it. Good for them. Perhaps someday they will sell me something more substantial than just a chain. (It would require me moving forward a millennium.)

I didn't look at the price. $4000 is almost a fully custom TiCycles titanium frame/steel fork fully equipped with sweet non-matching used parts. (My two best bikes.)

| I have 2002 Campy Record on my Master X-Light. The shifters have been rebuilt a couple of times. My LBS used to sell rebuilt ones for $60.00, I bought a couple. It still works flawlessly and it's so easy to work on. My newer Trek Madone has Ultegra 6800 11 speed Ultegra. I've grown to like it, but I'd swap it out for Campy if I had the $$$. I was watching old clips of road bike races on youtube from the 70's. Things were so simple back then, and nothing never broke. |

My bike's getting over 12 years old. Now having a wee bit of a challenge even finding specific 10 speed stuff. Proably coming up on the more cost effective to by a new bike time. Somehow the right shifter cable became all frayed in my right brifter. Had to take it half apart to get it out. The whole time that I was keepig track of tiny little plastic pieces, and screws that looked like they came from a pair of eyeglasses. I thought, if this doesn't work, I'm looking at new brifters and the decision whether I should go to 11 speed.
My cassette is huge now. I gave up, and got a long cage derailleur. Next might be SPD shoes on my road bike. Currently I have a Marinonni, because having been a real racer in the '80's, I was still hung up on a non-mass-produced thing. My next bike will probably be some 105 level off the shelf common name brand. Too old to care.... at least that's me.

| Not that I'll ever be riding the latest gear that is the topic of this post, but I applaud SRAM for continuing to offer road and mtb drivetrains that to some degree can be combined. E.g. road brifters with mtb range gears. |
