BB30 installation question

So, right now I have a Blue AC1 SL with a Dura-Ace crankset and BB. It has some type of adapter so that the BB can be used with the BB30. Thinking about switching to an FSA K-Force Lite compact with their BB30 bottom-bracket. What all would be involved in swapping it out? Any special tools required to install a BB30?

Get the right tools. Not worth buggering up a nice frame.

Just a park headset tool is all you need. Consider a pf30. Had better luck with those. Plastic cups make up for imperfections

not a fan of fsa cranks. years ago, swore I'd never use a set again but saw a sale and hoped they'd be okay so I could get one more year out of this frame and the axle cracked after only 2 months. They weren't K-forces though, they were gossamers. I'm glad they didn't fail on my recent Rainier ride.

If you are using Shimano cranks, you've got an adapter in there to take the spindle down to 24mm. Depends on what type of adapter you have, but it should be removable and fairly easy to push it, and the bearings, out.

In contrast to some others, I've had great experiences with BB30. I set the bearings (which are just standard 6806 bearings - get them from VXC bearings or whatever) with a Park Tool HHP-3. Be sure the shell surfaces are super super clean. I use blue waterproof boat trailer bearing grease between the shell and bearing, apply liberally and then clean up excess after install. Don't pull the bearings too hard against the c-clip.

Follow the crank mfg instructions closely. Too much pre-load will cause crazy drag and will nuke your bearings.

So I can install a press-fit in a BB30?

Thanks for the link to the BikeRadar installation guide. Man, I already miss good ol' threaded BB's. Other than the required Shimano wrench, they are so easy to install.

just make sure you have the right size press cups, they come with the Park Tool used to remove press fit bearings, and as stated, you use a headset press to install
I hear ya on the BB insanity, a frame with a press fit BB is always deal killer for me, hate that stuff. ANd the options for threaded BB's is just as crazy, give me a good ol white industries square taper BB anytime

BB30 and PF30 are not compatible. The BB shell is a different ID and the PF30 will not fit in the BB30 shell. You need to press in the bearings into the BB shell for the FSA BB30 to work. A Park Headset press is the best one to use. Make sure to look at the exploded diagram and follow the instructions

I understand a lot of people don't like PF30 as it is just a way for manufacturers to make frames with less precision (i.e. cheaper). But what about BB30? Is it a good system? I am looking at a new frame purchase (Masi Evoluzione or Bianchi Sempre) with BB30. I will use my 5 y/o Campy Chorus cranks.
