Totally different sport, but the Portland Trailblazers just won a playoff game that is going to be talked about a long time, and especially the performance of Damian Lillard. He starred all game, but the last 10 seconds was all him. With Paul George on him, he waved off a screen, stepped back and launched a three from 37' out. Hit it at the buzzer. 118-115. 50 points. 6 assists. Played 45 minutes. Defended Westbrook. Yes, Westbrook had a triple double, 29 points and 14 rebounds. But he fell apart in the closing minute.
So Van der Poel Sunday, Lillard tonight. Mind-blowing performances by athletes I like. Life's good!

No, no...the other magic show that's been happening on world stage is Ajax...making minced meat out of the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus with tantalizing soccer on a relatively slim budget.
Its been an excellent couple months. |

Back to Van der Poel. VeloNews is speculating that he could be the first to win all three world championships this year. CX, MTB and road.
Funny how things change. This sounds like a woman! Marianne Vos. No, she didn't do it all in one year and I don't know if she got the MTB title. And more serious, again, I love having the women riding the same course the same day and time. Radically better visibility. Better footage, much better crowds. I also like the UCI highlights of their races. Well done. Great footage. And racing that is as good to watch as the men. (That depends entirely on the day. Often the men's races are boring until the final minutes and the women's races much more dynamic. Amstel? Kasia Niewiadoma put on a show. Too bad that nothing besides VDP is going to be remembered from Sunday.)

Pauline Ferrand Prevot already did that in 2014 2015.
Vos tried but failed and overextended herself and had a recovery period that she's only now getting out of. Great results this year considering how the women's field has strengthened during that off period.
Good odds VDP will at some point own the three jerseys but odds are next to zero of doing that this year. Cooler heads will prevail. |

I see almost no chance he races Road Worlds. That schedule would crush him.
His goal is Olympic MTB Gold...he is not gonna endanger that on some obscure goal. |

Van der Poel qualified for Olympics this weekend with runner up in WC race (just like that). Expressed doubts about road worlds because it is between another MTB WC race in Canada (WC rankings determine start order in Tokyo) and a recon race on Tokyo course. But still hasn't conclusively ruled out road worlds. |

Vanderpoel is skipping MTB Worlds to race Road Worlds. Quite surprised he is doing this, given his focus on MTB Gold in Tokyo.

| Same here and a little disappointed. Given how he is doing on MTB circuit I feel he's more or less obliged to show up at that worlds. Road worlds can wait. But perhaps it's a grasp at true legend skipping randomly between disciplines. |

| Just saw he posted his full schedule for year. Last MTB race is Aug 11 in Sui. Then Tour of Norway, Tour of England on road ahead of road worlds. That actually makes descent sense if he was going to do those road races anyway. I think he's simply avoiding overloading travel schedule with additional period in North America. |
