Looks like it will finally happen. Sounds like it will be a wet edition and also windy. Just reading commentary from Tom Steels who rode two wet editions. Said he put preventative band aids on his hips and elbows because when it is wet there's a 50% chance you will crash at some point. Also when it is wet the peloton tends to break up after the first three or four sectors already and after that its every man, woman (first edition) and child for themselves. Should be a wild one.

Jeez back in the day of giants rather than splendid robots PR was a wet slopfest more often than not. This fan welcomes a return of pro cycling’s Everest at least in part as it used to be before power meters and race radios. Bring it on!

And this "you kids get off my lawn" geezer does not equate continuous and nearly instantaneous updates via team radio with JA dropping back to a team car for one pep talk with 60++k to go after which he was totally on his own. That single moment of coaching was not at all equivalent to race radio in its current incarnation. If the current tech was in place for the worlds, the Belgians would have done a lot different, including saving Enenepoel's legs for later.

Haha, no. The Belgian team car was exactly where the French team car was. If they had wanted to redirect Evenepoel's efforts it would have been very easy to do so. Yet they didn't. Why? Because everything at that point was going exactly according to their plan A, Evenepoel was executing his assigned tasks (jump with escapes; pull hard once shift was made) to perfection. The Belgians simply had a poor plan (several have since weighed in on the fact that Evenepoel should have been assigned different tasks; Evenepoel himself made suggestions about saving energy until later in the race during a Saturday pre-race meeting but he was solidly shut down by Belgian coach) and tunnel vision sticking to that plan. It was dissected again today in a roundtable of experts (third round table already this week, haha). The Belgians only adjusted their plan once van Aert finally hinted he was not good.

Example of where having no radios made a massive difference? The womens race in Tokyo. There were communication challenges (normally in a situation like that updates are given each time race passes the finish) that the Dutch coach was unable to overcome. Consequently only one rider (Vos) was aware of the danger of the escape, none of the others clued in until it was too late. With radios guaranteed that solo would have been pulled back.

More so than radios which we know they’ll have in Roubaix, I’m more interested in DQSs tire choice for Roubaix. Have they 100% embraced clinchers? And how will they hold up in wet?

Risk of pinch flats. That’s why I incorrectly guessed tubeless earlier.

The women's race today was a good preview. A lot of slick cobbles!

EPIC ride by Deignan….legendary. Rode every single cobble section solo.

Bummed Vos didn’t take the win though.

Great ride by Deignan. She lucked on on one of mud sectors slipping all over the place but just keeping it together. Vos looked far better on cobbles perhaps showing cyclocross advantage but started chase too late. Borgini looked brutal technically trying to churn a massive gear unclipping at some point. Really bad early crash for van Vleuten who once again is looking at a long path to recovery.

Wout with some work to do after Arenberg…lost the wheels after having to avoid a crash. He is about 30” off MVP.
