"At 6' and 165#, I often feel like the world's biggest fatass at bike races." - hey those are my specs!

Good point. Still, if memory serves back in the 80s most racers were more "regular" looking whereas over time we've had this trend towards the lean extreme. My hypothesis is this. Back in the old days you still had a lot of guys literally grabbed from the street and turned into pro cyclists as support riders, pack filler. It was much easier for a talent to stand out from the pack. These days, even Joe Average cyclist has a history in the sport, a professional training program, etc, etc. It has become a lot harder for the truely talented to escape from the clutches of the peleton. That is perhaps why extreme measures are taken, extreme weight loss, special sauce, etc. etc.

And yeah, those legs are scary.

After seeing lot of american and canadian racers the first time I went to a race in Europe (1988 tour) i was taken aback at how short and incredibly lean the riders were. the leanness stuck but the height of riders grew. a lot. so many riders over 6 foot. in 1988 most were shorter than my 5'10" oops I am over 50 now and shrinking. Now I am 5'9".

This reminds me … I'm friends with a rider who went into cycling after a serious ballet career as a youth. He switched when he realized he wasn't going to make it to the top level in dance. Although straight, he was often gibed by fellow pros — guys who are almost pedantically homophobic even when gay themselves — who assumed that all ballet dancers must be "fags." His response was that the average faggy ballet dancer was not someone you'd want to get into a fight with in dark alley. You'd lose.

True that, about male ballet dancers. Even though ballerinas are quite light (around 100 lbs), the men have to lift them overhead...and make it look effortless.

As for Froome's legs looking like women's legs...girl needs to eat a sandwich!
