Watching the Tour yesterday and while a rider was getting his "seat post" adjusted I wondered... If is a seat post, then why is it called a saddle? Or, if it is a saddle, then why is it called a seat post? Lou...

I've always said "seat". But I grew up around horses. Saddles were these big, heavy handmade leather pieces of very functional art; expensive and treasured (and smelly).

Maybe a Brooks Pro was a saddle. Leather glued over a plastic shell? Nah.

Just to be different, I call it a chair and chair pin.

I refer to them as seat and seat post. I suspect it was called a saddle back in the high wheel days when the leather draped over the top more resemble the leather draped over a horse, and that verbiage stuck in some places.

I wonder if horse saddle makers made the first bike chairs? I kind of go both ways. Sometimes I call it a seat, sometimes saddle. I do actually call them chairs sometimes. Or even asshatchet if appropriate.
