"It's tempting to say that drivers hate cyclists, but that's not true. What they hate is physics."

I'm at my wit's end lately. Getting buzzed in the bike lane and honked at (and buzzed) for riding in the road. Almost can't wait for the darkness of winter when drivers are generally more forgiving of a well-lit cyclist.
In the past 2 weeks, I've been buzzed, brushed, and right-hooked. 2 of the occasions, the drivers went into nearby parking lots. So I stopped to have a chat. I'll tell you, people are not really interested in being confronted about their driving habits and knowledge (or lack therof)

Was brushed by a school bus the other day while riding in the bike lane. That is a new one.

We don't have bike lanes in my neck of the woods. Mostly narrow country roads with a lot of climbing. My experiences come in spurts. I will ride for weeks with nothing but considerate drivers. Some are so careful they won't pass me. Then comes the spurts where I will get buzzed repeatedly, flipped off, cutoff, honked at and so on. I've been to the point where I feel like quitting. Then everything gets quite again. Maybe phases of the moon? I dunno. The main thing is to make it home safely...oh yeah, school buses. Whenever I hear one coming up behind me, I just find a place to pull over and stop. They won't move over for anyone...

I just had this conversation with my Uber driver yesterday. A co-worker of my wife's was killed awhile back, riding out near Madison. She tried to give me the, I don't want you riding on the road speech. I understand her concern, but that just not going to happen. Trust me I see plenty of duchebag cyclists here in Tucson ridng two and three abreast, to warrant the I hate cyclist mentality of drivers out here. You know what? I hate motorists that text and drive, so phuck you too.

Bus drivers here are terrible also, got buzzed by the rear end / bumper one day, it was nuts, and zero concern about my life.
love that story Chinook, I love catching up to motorists to have that conversation, their reactions can be quite funny, most of them don't even realize what they did, just clueless.
I pretty much just hate all people in cars Spud, no respect out there from any motorists here in Santa Fe, we have some pretty bad groups out there that create a lot of anger with motorists, I will not ride with them.

CP, I have seriously considered implementing the "safe pass" tool we used to joke about making 40 years ago for Boston traffic. A simple marker that would "tag" cars passing within say, a foot. Easy to do. Mount a spoke-like wire extending horizontally a foot beyond your body. Quality spring steel would do the job inicely.

Yes, I could see drivers taking me to court to pay for their scraped paint. I would demand a jury. And ask, or have my lawyer ask, if the jury would be comfortable paying the cost of a paint job to a motorist who came within that distance of hitting their kid (bringing in the bike and wire to demonstrate). (In Oregon, a motorist must pass a cyclist "safely". If the police did not ticket the driver, perhaps ask the jury if, again thinking of their loved ones, if that distance struck them as "safe". There might be a police officer squirming a little at this line of reasoning if he is in the room. Not all bad.)

I got buzzed by a bus this morning. Heading across an overpass, I thought he was a bit close, so I stayed in the on ramp and let him pass. He drove into the ~3' bike lane by over a foot. If I had been there I would have been squashed against the curb ( I am 32" wide). PS I hope my wife never hears about incidents like this.
