Not intentional but it was a nice compliment

At Thanksgiving my wife and I had an old friend (he turns 91 in January) along with his out of town daughter and son-in-law at our home. We had a lovely meal and nice afternoon of visiting.

The daughter, who I've only met once before somewhat briefly, later emailed my wife to ask if I was OK as I looked 'thin and gaunt.'

For a cyclist, I told my wife, that's a compliment. When people tell me I look healthy I know I'm at least five pounds heavy.

I'm 137#, had she seen me when I road raced at 129# she would have called protective services

Yup. I get told I am looking good at 160 pounds. 155 feels much better. 150 better still. I raced 145 and felt incredible.

A nice effort, but you're probably still too heavy.....

"the trick is to keep losing weight until your friends and family ask you if you've been sick. then you know you're within 10 pounds. if they start whispering to each other, wondering if you've got cancer or aids, you're within 5. when they actually do an intervention, you're at race weight." - Slowman (Dan Empfield)

I was down to 145 before Madison this year....lots of whispers, no intervention. I'll try harder next year.

CK, that's hilarious. Cyclists are crazy that way but wrestlers take it to a whole other level. I looked at my year book from when I was in high school and we looked horrible! Trying to make weight and force myself to an unnatural level of body fat was an idiotic.

Lost 18 pounds, and now down to 158. Losing weight is so much cheaper than having to buy a lighter bike :-) Now with the Holidays right around the corner, the key is to keep it down. Have to stay away from those IPAs.

It's all relative. I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs. But compared to my three older brothers who are all now over 230 lbs, I was the skinny guy around the Thanksgiving table who everyone said looks too thin . . .

Somehow related to Dale's wresting story:

Weight loss story to share: There is something to the "paleo diet" claims. I lost 20 lbs in 16 weeks by dropping the diet sodas and going high protein, low carbs. Eat a steak or big meal of salmon. Wake up the next morning and weigh less. The carbo loading of my racing days has been supplanted by high protein.

My wife did a diet called "Whole 30" (actually still doing it....similar to a low-carb, high protein diet - lots of meats, veggies, fruit, but eliminating all processed sugars, carbs, dairy, etc. simple potatoes and fruits were OK though...processed was the key.

Lost over 20 lbs in a month and has re-upped for a second month. Pretty amazing results.

However, it eliminates alcohol, so I am out!!

I'm with you: I did not drop the alcohol. It's is a lot of calories, but some calories are worth it!

I'm 5'10". Back in the day I raced road & dirt at 155 +/-. My buddies always joked that I was "built for the classics". Probably could have reasonably dropped another 8-10 pounds but didn't have the desire. Once the fam & other life responsibilities really kicked in I moved up to 165-170, but still remained somewhat competitive racing dirt (mid-pack, occasional top-10 Sport, or as they call it now Cat 2 level).
The last 18 months or so have seen me catching more colds/flu than ever before combined with some other health issues (that I hope are now behind me) and the resulting decrease in exercise/mileage and steady eating has seen me break the 200 mark! Hoping to work my way down to a reasonable weight, but it won't happen overnight. Holiday season doesn't make it easier, either. LOL

How'd I miss a weight thread for so long? LOL. I grew an inch when I graduated college at 21. I was "almost 5'-7" racing as a junior at 122lbs. Hit almost 5'-8" now, and slowly crept to 140's throughout my 20's. Was downright fat at 175 for a few months at about 30yo. Got back to 165 for ever, then briefly to 142 about 7-8 yrs ago, and these days, been hovering in the high 150's. NOBODY thinks I'm heavy, by "normal" standards. When I was 142, I started getting the bobble head look, and couldn't find normal men's pants that fit. So, I think "some" of the weight must be maturation/muscle/bone along with my inch of height. Typing this "outloud" may shame me back to 150. I'm pretty sure I could never get below 140 again. Not too many forums men can commiserate about weight!
