She's a runner and used to events with her daughters or another group that stick together at the slowest members pace, which is her reference point.

There are a bunch of rides in town from beginner/ no-drop to full gas hammer fests.
Thursday is the latter.

The weather was iffy and the group was small, everyone there was solid. We drilled it!
Had a nice paceline, smooth rotation, full gas. I was on the rivet the whole time, was close to popping out the back multiple times and on the verge of puking 90% of the time.

Managed to get a solid jump at the city limit sign and took my first, and probably only, sign of the year. There is a nasty hill at the end... 10-14% grade and ended up 3rd out of 9 or 10 guys. One guy got blown out the back early on and took a shortcut to intercept us only to get shelled again a half dozen miles later.

At the end of the ride I rode home, went into the house completely drained and laughing with glee that I not only managed to hang with the group, I was in the thick of it the whole time.

Told my wife, "You know how you run at the slowest person pace? Well, we ride at the fastest persons pace until we get shelled, then we limp back alone and pray we can hang a little longer next time."

This was after her shock that we didn't blink when we dropped someone.

"You guys are so mean." Yes... yes we are

Love this!!! I feel like I'm on top of the world if I got out to one of the local hammerfests and am not only able to barely hang on but launch a few strong moves only to then be faced with reality. It's completely mashochistic that we enjoy the punishment we put on ourselves but secretly (or not so secretly) like seeing others being pushed to the limits by our efforts. That feeling of being completely on the rivet, sitting at the very tip of the saddle in hopes of eeking out every watt possible...as the Crossfitters would say, it's weakness leaving the body.
I could never do those events where everyone is a winner just by signing their name on the entry waiver. That's not real life.
Then you get to go to bed with Jello legs while brimming with happiness.

I could never understand how running at the slowest pace was fun? In a group we ride much faster than we can alone. Speaking from the perspective of the guy who is always amongst the first to be dropped, that when I have a keep up day it is such a reward and treat. that is fun and I guess I have to accept the getting dropped for the reward when I am good. I ride slow enough when I am alone.

During my brief failed foray into running they always went at fastest pace shelling riffraff like myself out the back. Try to run in the Onterrible country side by yourself in freezing temperatures with a stiff wind blowing. I nixed it pretty quick as a winter training alternative.

Guess it depends which group you join.

Master, running at slower paces allows you to run more....not necessarily that day, but the next day and the next and the next, etc.

It is really hard for cyclists to understand this mentality....and it is why cyclists who start running always end up hurt. When I started running, I had the cardio to run faster than my body could handle....and I was hurt all the time. It wasn't until I slowed down that I could start to handle the load.

It is not that running at a slower pace is "fun" it is just that it allows you to run more....which lets you run faster (on race day).

It has taken me literally 6 years to figure this out....
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!

x2 on the running for cyclists. I was at my daughters a few years ago and got on mer treadmill.

An hour on the treadmill. No problem

Next day? Problem

The cardio can way out do the rest of the body. I thought I would never walk again.

I agree with the go hard thing on group rides. I talk like I do them all of the time, which I don't. But when I did, it was when I was young, in NY. I got used to the "style" there. Then here, in NM, I do one every year or so, and then remember why I don't. The rides here are "hard", but very buttoned down and smooth. Fast rotating pace line, designated sprint, etc., etc. When I "learned" on the Gimbels ride (been around since the 1940's!), there was a "neutral" start, to a designated spot, and one sign sprint. In between, it was a free for all. Attacks, breaks, groupettos, whatever. Maybe it's not better, but like all things, you get used to what you get used to...

Is the "dreadmill", the equivalent to a runner as rollers are to cyclists?

CK what do we owe you for the findings on your 6 year research? I honestly appreciate it. Now I may try running.

The dreadmill is WAY worse than rollers....I can do an hour on rollers, no problem. An hour on the dreadmill is agony....did one 2-hour run this year....never again.

As long as you don't get hurt running, there is othing owed!!

Back to the mean spirited dropping: When you join a club group ride, you usually know the terms. Most clubs have various participation levels. In my area, the local club posts these for weekly rides: http://ocbicycleclub.org/join-us
