GPS spoofing

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614689/ghost-ships-crop-circles-and-soft-gold-a-gps-mystery-in-shanghai/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

When Strava gets big enough, someone will spoof it.  And KOMs will go to hackers at their desk.

You heard it here first.  (Well, maybe not.  It might already be happening.)

GPS doping! Might as well, Strava is rife with bogus stuff.

Speaking of Strava, I might hold a Strava segment along with three other guys for a long time. We were doing a full on pace line/ TTT effort on a rails-to-trail. Really a stupid idea, the trail is hard packed gravel with cattle guards, bridges, potholes, with intermittent loose sections of gravel. Anyway, we were drilling it for maybe a 20 minute section before someone said we'll all going to die if we continue this idiocy. One of the guys was back here for a class reunion and pointed out we still hold the record several years after our one-and-only gravel TTT.

My kid complains some of his course records have been stolen by guys clearly riding bikes instead of running. Unless the local crowd can run at world record pace.

Interesting article on the NPR site regarding sand - the apparent reason for the the GPS spoofing in Shanghai. Apparently quality sharp, abrasive sand is becoming scarce because we have poured so much into concrete.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20191108-why-the-world-is-running-out-of-sand?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Funny, I've been noticing our willingness to rip down massive concrete structure that would have been wonders of the world in past times for such noble reasons as needing more box seats. Seattle's Kingdome comes to mind. A structure that was engineered and built to last 1000 years and survive a serious earthquake. Reduced to rubble after 30 years to be replaced with two separate stadiums.

Now that sand we have squandered so much of is becoming so scarce that that it is apparently worth hacking GPS tracking so ships can mine that sand from river beds in stealth. Wow!

Have him flag the results as being the "wrong activity". Strava will evaluate the files and remove them.
Just say "NO!" to WCP!!!!
