Wow. Went by the old Performance Bike Shop today. It's a temporary a pop up Halloween shop...during a pandemic. Now THAT'S bad!

This year, in the spirit of Halloween, they have some really bad vibes to give out.

This geezer was a Chapel Hill resident when Performance was local. They were trying things - some hits, some misses - and they had a table with nearly free versions of both they wanted to unload, for us poor students. Quality so high that some lasted for decades.
They got it right before they went all Icarus.

20 years ago they had mesh tanks for $19. I bought 5. Still have them and wear them. Patagonia Ts now take their place up to 75F but for the hot stuff, those now far from white tanks still do the job so well I never think of them until it gets so hot I simply want less. Those 5 have yet to have their first "issue" (tear, run or anything else). They've been though the wash hundreds of times.

More recently, the Performance house brand gloves kept getting better every change. Last that I got are some of the best gloves I've ever owned for doing their job and not calling any attention to themselves. Many close to epic rides on them. They are finally getting old but still, no holes, no torn stitches. My house brand shoes have died but only after years of year round riding in all weather fixed. (It took a few years but I eventually learned that Lake made them. Now my regular riders are Lakes and get 90% of my miles.)

I've bought a couple of lone wheels with nice Shimano hubs and Open Pro rims for bargain prices. Now some of my best wheels. rebuilt with DT Revolutions.

I generally didn't have good luck with their tubes. and generally stayed away from the rubber.

Performance was my local shop here in So. Cal. for more than twenty years. I know most people think of them for their catalog/online presence but, honestly, they were a great local shop around here. the same guys worked at the place for years. They gave great service at great prices and they always had a big and varied inventory of parts and consumables. When the other local shops all started becoming concept stores for Specialized or Trek 10-15 years ago, their service went to hell and they never seemed to have the right stuff in stock. Performance almost always had what I needed in stock and, if they didn't, they could get it for me fast. I also bought all of my kids' bikes there over the years. I really miss them. Our local shops here in Orange County are overall pretty terrible these days.

I miss Performance too, we had several stores in the Denver/Boulder area. Great for when I needed lube, tubes, tools or road bibs. They'd be out of a lot of stuff that I'd need right that moment ("no we don't have a 29 mtb tire in stock, but we have a sale on 700x23 tires!" uh, yeah thanks...) but their prices and promotions couldn't be beat.

Our's wasn't particularly great. It was in a car-centric mall. Their inventory wasn't particularly tailored to our area. We have terrible goat heads, and the tire selection didn't reflect that at all. A lot of the floor staff didn't know much about bikes, and often you couldn't find someone, even when you wanted to pay.

There was an REI nearby that often had what I needed when the Performance didn't.

The mechanics were the opposite. They knew what they were doing, helpful, and plugged into the local goings-on.

I felt bad when the place closed, mostly for the "real" bike staff, because there's not a lot of gigs like that in town.
