Ok, I really have no idea but I just noticed that it is this weekend. Blame it on never learning to swim when I was a kid.

Why'd you post this in the doping forum?

As for the race, I think it will be Jan Frodeno for the men and Daniela Rief for the ladies.

You can stream the race live from ironmanlive.com if anyone is interested.

I'll be cheering for Turkish Burcu Omur to put in a good performane. Rode with her last stage of Haute Route. Tough cookie. She trains in Colorado. Do they have water there?

I hadn't even thought of a doping link. I was more poking a little fun at how a typical cyclist is a little suspicious of triathalon. At the same time I have huge respect for the sport and its participants and the dedication it takes to do such a gruelling event. I also like IM Kona from the standpoint that anyone can try to qualify. Although a little put off by how expensive IM events have become.

Here is what I have learned since I started doing tri's....

*triathletes are some fit b*tches. I train WAY more now than I did as a cyclist. I wonder how much better I could have been on the bike had I simply trained more.

*balancing 3 disciplines is tough and requires a crap-ton of discipline

* triathletes actually have upper body definition / muscles

* Front-of-pack (FOP) triathletes are pretty damn strong on the bike. The stereotype of them really needs to change. That said, if you are even a decent bike racer, you can be at the front in most local tris.

* Tri's don't have to be ungodly expensive, but once into them, it is pretty easy to get sucked into the $$ race. That said, I know the latest tri bike isn't gonna make a huge difference for me. 1) My current bike is pretty damn slippery (Shiv TT w/ nosecone) and 2) my position is good. Fastest way for me to improve my times is by improving my run, then my swim.

* too many triathletes get wrapped up in the minutia of data, relying too much on wind tunnel data, etc. Choose fast equipment, but stop trying to worry about which is *fastest* because there is no such thing.

* I really miss bike racing.

We sit down as a family and watch the NBC coverage of the race every year. It's an amazing event. The kids love it. I always go in cynical about how far they will go to spin the sentimental stories about the age groupers. And then I always find myself choked up and inspired.

A buddy of mine just got me to commit to doing an Olympic distance tri with him next spring. It'll be my first since 2006. Looking forward to it but really not looking forward to trying to find my running legs after all of these years.

Tom, check out the BarryP Running plan. Cliff Note version - high frequency, shorter distances. Will help you avoid running injuries by doing too much, too soon. See link below.

By cost, I was more referring to the IM entry fee. I.e. $650 to get in IM Louisville. Yikes!! I have a friend who can't afford that (she hates the mass start swim too) so she just does a solo unsupported version every year or so. Freaky fit at 65yo.

Another friend got so into IMs that she started her own coaching business.

As for me, I gotta work on the swim. That really is a life/death hangup for me.

what CK said in Post #2.......
Had a guy at the shop, Hunter, his daughter is one of the organizers, the guy is 80, still doing ironman, his 15th?

It's not for me, but I am impressed at the training involved, etc....for me lately, my insanity has been doing 24 hour races on the single speed mtb, did a couple solo, and a 3 and 4 man team, it's insane, but a ton of fun

Chinook - join a masters swim club, they will set you straight in a matter of weeks. Proper hydrodynamic position and stroke efficiency are key to getting fast. My daughter is going through this, wicked speed improvement over last season.

Watching a tri is like watching grass grow. I'll check out the scores when they're in.

BTW - the way I see it Ironman training is like Haute Route training only a lot less fun.

yeah, IM entry fees are pretty ridiculous....says the guy who just dropped $700 for Madison next year! But here are lots of other races that don't cost as much and cover the same distances...Rev3 races are supposed to be very well done, and not as packed.

The mass start swim is definitely intimidating, but a lot more of the races are changing over to "rolling starts" where you self-seed by your estimated finish time. But man...the start @ madison last year was NUTS! Had to swim the first 200 meters like Tarzan so I wouldn't get kicked in the face.

And just pick a race that is wetsuit legal....damn near impossible to drown in one!! And like OC said, join a master's swim team and you will quickly pick up the skills you need.
