Twelve days after the Colombian Marlon Perez became the sixth rider to test positive for the substance GW501516, the Venezuelan rider Miguel Ubeto Aponte has the dubious distinction of joining that list.

The World Anti Doping Agency has issued a rare warning to all athletes not to use the substance GW501516, which it states is being sold on the black market and used by some athletes. The agency has expressed strong words of caution about the substance, which was added to the banned list three years ago.

“The side effect of this chemical compound is so serious that WADA is taking the rare step of warning “cheats” to ensure that there is complete awareness of the possible health risks to athletes who succumb to the temptation of using GW501516 for performance enhancement,” it stated in a communication.

“GW501516 was a developmental drug that was withdrawn from research by the pharmaceutical company and terminated when serious toxicities were discovered in pre-clinical studies. Clinical approval has not, and will not be given for this substance.”

I dunno but I'll say this; the sudden tide of central American riders doing well is a bit curious. If it was a couple sure, but a whole bunch all at the same time. Que Pasa?

They always come out to play in the Giro. Now if they are rocking and rolling in July...I will have serious questions.

How do they get their hands on these drugs? If it was a trial drug they would have to be in the trial to get it. If the trial drug fails as is the case here there are no trials, sooooo...??? Why is there any inventory of this drug anywhere, and how is it getting out of the producers control and into their hands?

Keith I think it is a different kind of addiction. Why would anyone shoot up heroin? Or smoke crack? They are addicted to riding better and the adulation they get.

Inferno - these things get quicker on the black market than they get trialed. The black market is far bigger than the legal production. Same happened with EPO, produced at about 6x the amounts than would be needed for medical purposes.

+1 OC

I had no idea what GW501516 was so I Googled it. I found some bodybuilding sites were people were discussing it as an effective tool for 'cutting' - reading those messages it was like this stuff is the best ever, it doesn't even taste bad! (which, I guess some of the other 'supplements' do??). Not a single word about possible side effects...

In 2013 New Scientist reported that "tests on rats showed that at all doses, the drug rapidly causes cancers in a multitude of organs, including the liver, bladder, stomach, skin, thyroid, tongue, testes, ovaries and womb."[4] In 2013 WADA took the rare step of warning potential users of the compound of the possible health risks. They stated "clinical approval has not, and will not be given for this substance".[2][24]

yeah, wonder why anyone would take this stuff. crazy

I met this amateur Cat 1 rider a few years back. We were I guess discussing doping. I don't really recall what we were talking about or how we got there but at one point he said: If you could take something that would almost guarantee a win and you could not get caught, wouldn't you take it? He said he would. I asked him if he would take it anyway knowing that he would probably suffer serious side effects later and would die young. he said he would take it. Dude was weird in other ways too. Reminded me of Ricco.

We don't get these guys because we are normal.

...but really the peleton is so much cleaner now.....

what a bunch of crap. Theyre all still doing stuff. These guys who try all this $4it are morons and morally bankrupt. I am rapidly becoming of the opinion that all pro cyclists who excel in everything except maybe the one day races are by definition dopers.

Stronz, not at all arguing with your opinion that doping is still rampant, but I'd like to know how you formed this opinion. How do you know this? A long history in the sport, personal knowledge, something else?

" I am rapidly becoming of the opinion that all pro cyclists who excel in everything except maybe the one day races are by definition dopers."

Why? More oxygen, more power, and better recovery after hard training rides don't help one day racers?

I read an interview with a one-day racer about 10 years ago (I'd have to dig up the article to find out who it was) who claimed he never doped. When asked why he never excelled in stage races he simply said, "without 'proper preparation' I can only be fast enough to be competitive for 3-5 days, then I get tired."
