It just occurred to me while responding to another post: do we know if LA really got one teste removed? Most of what he told us has been BS, is that? To be clear, I don't doubt that he had cancer but is there verification that he only has one swung low?

I don't think there is any treatment for testicular cancer that involves leaving a cancerous testicle in place.....and certainly not for a case as advanced as -7's. Once it has metastasized beyond its original location (Stage IV), it can no longer be contained there, even after treatment.

I was thinking along the lines of lumpectome vs. mastectomy. I guess a teste is pretty small, even a lumpectomy would take most of it. Good point about the stage.

I write this post to jm and to anyone else who uses the mocking term "uniballer" when referencing Armstrong's cancer: this does not reflect well on you. Hate the guy all you want (why not when it's so easy) but don't mock getting cancer and don't mock surviving what was truly a very close brush with death. No stuttering or snarky responses please. Just read this and think.

And as far as medical details go, this applies to everyone, the less you say, the smarter you appear. "testicular sparing surgery" is more theoretical than actual for good reason. One is plenty.

Well, to be fair, LA himself "mocks" it w/ his pseudonym, Juan Pelota.

One thing I would never slight the guy on though would be his battle w/ cancer. He fought hard and well in that particular battle.

As cosmic said, LA used uniballer and Juan Pelota.

I assume that you are taking offense because you have lost loved ones to cancer. I have lost many loved ones to cancer as well.

"Well, to be fair, LA himself "mocks" it w/ his pseudonym, Juan Pelota" and "As cosmic said, LA used uniballer and Juan Pelota."

There is precedent for the idea that what one (or a people) calls himself can be OK for themselves but very definitely NOT OK for others to call them. I spent some time with some locals who proudly called themselves "xxxxx"s but made it clear that if I called them that same thing, I had better be the biggest guy in the room. And there's an ethnic group in this country that regularly call themselves "yyyyy"s but anyone else saying it is again grounds for a fight.

I don't have to like LA at all to have the respect for a cancer survivor and to never call him those names.

Just to make myself clear, I am short, I am white, and I am a guy. Y'all may feel free to call me "The Short White Guy™" to my face. I am big enough that I can handle this description.

On a side note, I have had black guys call me "The Short White Guy™", and I am not offended. In fact, when I was in college, I was valet parking a party for several 76'rs and Barkley shows up late, asks me to park his sled. He drops his keys into my hand from a mile above me and says "here you go 'little white man'". His "white" wife sticks up for me and starts giving him $hit. I had a great comeback along the lines of a reverse "Driving Miss Daisy" that had him and his team mates rolling.

I dunno, ben.....when a guy uses the name as his pseudonym, has it for his twitter handle for millions to follow and has a cafe using the same name (and even has the name copyrighted), I'd say it is fair game for others to use it.

I see this as a simple matter of respect; for myself, whether or not the other person/people deserve it. Using terms like those discussed here makes me feel smaller. If it makes you feel bigger, all power to you.

As I don't refer to LA by using either of those names, so it doesn't make me feel "bigger" in the slightest. And as noted above, the one aspect of LA you will never see me criticized is his fight against cancer (both personal and through LAF).

My point was pretty simple - JP is a name that LA uses and embraces. Therefore, it is kinda hard to see how others using it should be considered offensive.

CK, I hadn't heard Juan Pelota before. (I don't follow LA's business ventures and I haven't been in Austin in 40 years.) I was referring to the title of this thread. Even so ... say an African American opens a pub and calls it "The N****** Nook" I say that changes nothing in what is proper or acceptable to call him/them. And if he uses it on Twitter? Still no change.

Juan Pelota is a Spanish play on words for "One Ball". Pelota is the Spanish for a bocce ball and Juan is a phonetic equivalent of "one". He used it as his pseudonym when travelling in hotels and later as his Twitter handle, as well as the name of the cafe attached to Mellow Johnny's (see pic above).

I see no equivalence to your example above. The names being discussed here are names that LA created, promoted and advanced. They are not names associated with centuries of human rights abuse, murder, and violence hoisted upon a race against their will.

Again, I don't refer to LA by those names, but don't really have an issue when others do.

Sorry, he deserves all the ridicule he gets for whoring the cancer community to enrich himself. From a corporate standpoint, that was an excellent thing to do. From a human perspective, he does not get a pass. I for one do not respect this so-called "fight" that he won because he battled so hard. You survive cancer because of the quality of treatment and luck. There is nothing heroic about his "fight" with cancer when you look at it from that perspective. Stop making this guy into a hero. Plenty of survivors who deserve our praise much more than this two-bit nutria.
