After 3 years of looking at my obscenely expensive and crazy light tubular wheels hanging on the wall, I decided to try them again. Question is can I really ride tubulars as every day training wheels. I dont race so Im not using them as special "race day" wheels. Just like cool equipment that is light. So who uses tubulars as their every day wheels - and what tricks do you have for decreasing the likelihood of flatting. Thx!

| I used them all the time a few years ago but the hassle factor, cost, flats were more than enough for me to reserve them for race day only. I now use a higher end clincher and call that good. |

| unfortunately that was my conclusion after using these for a season too. But I was hoping some dedicated fanatic (wait isnt that all of us?) is using tubies and can shame me into using them again. |

Back in the old days, when clinchers sucked, I rode tubulars year 'round. But that was "back east". Here in the south west, with goat heads, never.

I trained exclusively on tubulars for about 20+ years....and would likely still be on them ahd I not lucked into a free warranty PowerTap wheel for my training wheel.
Best advice I can give you is to use a sealant in the tires....but not Stans (can harden over time). Look into the Tufo sealant or the Caffelatex stuff.Works great....I went years w/o a flat using the TUFO sealant. Worst case scenario would be a slow leak that I would not notice until the next day. Drop a bit more sealant in the tires and it usually solved the problem entirely.
Absolutely no reason you can't ride tubies as your everyday tire..... |

| awesome CK! - thx. any suggestions on best tire for puncture resistance? currently have veloflex's on but research suggests conti gatorskins are pretty durable |

| Conti clinchers tend to rip sidewalls; don't have experience with tubies. |

| funny smokey I have the exact opposite experience with Conti clinchers. 4 season gatorskins and 4000s have been so reliable and puncture/tear resistant for me. |

Oh god....please don't ride Gatorskins. I know you aren't racing, etc but they are crap-riding tires. Yeah, they are bulletproof, but they ride like schitt.
My default is still the good ol' Vittoria Corsa CX, but with sealant. Great ride, fairly durable and sealant helps solve any other issues. |

| I got so fed up with changing flats (yes, even with Conti gators and 4000s [sidewall more than tread]) that I switched to Specialized Armadillos. No more flats. I passed that bike to my son, and still no flats. With the relatively new Trek and its Bontragers, still no flats (thump on head to knock on wood). I know it's bad luck to discuss the f word, but that's the thread topic. |

Very funny Zoot -- all about the prostate. keeps weight off the anterior perineum. Prostatitis = muy malo
My clincher solution for no flats is "the tire inside a tire" system. I cut off the bead and lay an old tire inside the real tire then put the tube in. Really really effective. Heavier yes. But flats suck.
About sealant --am I correct in the following: you take the valve off the presta and fill the tire up with the gew, then screw the valve back on and inflate, yes? what is the propper fill volume? or is the sealant used only when you get a flat? |
