Seriously amazing ride. Congrats. And bonus points for skipping work to do it. Pics are floating around on the facebook.

Yes he did and he rode Kettle Mettle Dirty Fundo the weekend before that, 95kms on gravel in BC Okanagan. Pics and a video of that on FB as well.

Unfortunately I did not bring warm enough clothes to the top, so by the time I got back down I was too cold for a second ascent. It was actually easier than I had expected. ~5000 feet of climbing, and nothing so steep that I had to use my lowest gear (I have a triple, so am geared pretty low).

I have come to the conclusion that I like climbing far more than descending. I have not estimated what clothing to bring very well.
My trip to Bend at the end of August was my first extended climb, and descent (~2600 feet), but it was a reasonably warm day.
In the middle of Sept I did the John Wayne trail 1.5 times, and was pretty cold, but that was in heavy rain (~.7 inches that day). I wasn't so cold that I could not go up again, until I ran out of time.
This time I completely underestimated the cold. It was mid to upper 40s and sunny at the bottom at 8:30. I expected it to warm up, so only brought arm warmers. By the time I got to the top, the fog was closing in and the temp at the top was ~35 F. About five miles down the hill, of the 19, I pulled to the side in a patch of sun to try to warm up. By the time I got most of the way down I knew I wasn't going back up. I got to the car, jumped in, turned the buttheat on and cranked the heat. I sat there shivering and it took me a while to warm up. My fingers were so cold that I kept pulsing the brakes to make sure I could still use them. The full fingered gloves did nothing to prevent heat loss. Upper 30's, no sun and up to 30 mph speed made for a worse combination than I had expected. I ended up slowing down just to cut the wind chill.

Next time I bring every piece of clothing necessary for a cold winter ride. They were all in the car, and I had the space for them, but I was an idiot. I intended to bring more clothes, but started riding away from the car, and decided not to turn around to get them.

Edit: I might have turned around and got more clothes if the entrance gate had had the temp at the top, but he looked and there were no temps listed. I had never heard the rule of thumb 3 degree for every 1000 feet either. In all, I had fun and will do it again. If the weather cooperates and Alison has something else planned, perhaps in a couple of weeks.

It was great to finally meet OC at the Kettle Mettle. Hopefully next year we can meet the whole family.

Kettle Mettle was a lot of fun too.
The weather was fantastic. Instead of the predicted upper 30s at the start it was low 50s. We, those of us near the back, did not get any rain until after the finish. There were riders in the middle that got hailed on.
The surface started off wonderful, packed fine gravel and smooth. After about 10 miles it got rocky with a few patches of slightly loose surface. There was one small patch where the surface was bad enough that I passed people that were walking their bikes. After 25 miles, when we got to the top of the inital 2600 foot climb, it became a potholed road with a loose surface. I rode from side to side trying to keep fairly level. At about mile 30 or so, rain had fallen and the potholes became puddles, which I also tried to avoid to prevent a mud stripe up my chest and face. At about mile 30 I did not think we would meet the 4:30 timing deadline, but at perhaps mile 44 the surface smoothed out, and a quick calculation said we might make it if we hauled tail. The next 16 miles were a time trial to the finish (which we were not sure the distance to because of rerouting the finish path). We finished with 12 minutes to spare.
I am glad I trained as I did. At about mile 14, on the rocky section, I was wondering how I would do if the rest was the same. Having done it once, next time I might try to up the pace a bit.
It was a fun and well run event.

Hahaha - I've had those kind of downhills SidebySide. Many times.

And this post is useless without pics.

I'm not much of a photographer. I never want to stop to take a pic when climbing, and was not willing to stop of the way down due to the fog.

Here are some under exposed pics near the top.

Nice - reminds me of Haleakala scenery earlier this year, similar coolness but wetter. I guess you can't just take shots on the fly with the hand cycle, didn't think of that. Took your hero shot from FB plus a few of my own from Kettle...

I must admit to tearing off from start, guilty as charged. But the pre and post-ride drinks and food were excellent and nice to meet SidebySide and his friend Joe, after hooking up w Keith earlier this summer. Wait, did I accidentally bump into Canucklehead this year too (Montreal airport), or was that last year already?

Great pics.

Just gotta say that the pic with the handcyclist in the wheelchair moved me. Thanks for that.

And please help me in my ignorance. Is that man our side by side?

LSD - yes that's our SidebySide and indeed major props. That handcycle weighs about 50lbs I believe so getting it up hills is a huge effort.

And make no mistake, the gravel shots just show the easy sections. As per SidebySide reports there were rocky rattle sections (had to fix my headset post-ride), pothole riddled sections, sandy sections where I was spinning 34x32 to get through on 30mm tires and washboard downhill. Very nice challenge.

The funniest story of weekend, aparently SidebySide and Chinook work in same office but it took them some years to figure it out.

How Chinook and I met is kind of funny too. I knew he worked near me because he mentioned once that he rides on the trail near work. I'd also been hearing from a friend at work about this maniac who literally ride to work every day, rain or shine, about 20 to 25 miles each way. I was then riding home one evening, and broke the brazing that holds the crank to the chainrings. I was sitting in the dark on the side of the trail and someone stopped to help. He asked if I was SideBySide. I just stared back dumbfounded.

Wow, wonderful shots for a wonderful ride. Yeah, I made ride with some of you all one day. But my fastest days are decades ago. So if you don't mind chatting while I'm on your wheel, we're all good. LOL.

That raised wooden trail is awesome. Is that a reclaimed railroad trestle? It looks pretty light duty, but you never know. I used love riding across the outer bikeway on the George Washington bridge where you had scoot around the main towers. Very cool. Also remember riding over the open grating on the Queensboro bridge. Just a wee bit unnerving! There's a highway overpass I go over here, that has this like, I dunno two foot railing, always conscientious to not fall on the Interstate below! Speaking of riding with forumites. Gonzo, I did the Tour of the Rio Grande. (Did you come down?) Was only going to do 50 or 60 of the hundred. Left later than anyone, with a huge tailwind and turned around at 20 for a 40 mile ride. The head wind back was epic. Found a fit Olevo Rapido guy. Was on his wheel. Tried to be polite and pull up for a minute. He came back through, and my heart rate (I'm 50) was 180. Then we hit an incline. Back to the head wind. Then I got an ocular migraine. Ah, to be young again. LOL.

Hey Nick - yes, its an old abandoned railroad, used to carry ore/coal, forestry products and passengers from Okanagan.
