Dutch Pro-continental cycling team Vacansoleil has proven that it’s been a worthy recipient of one of the Vuelta A Espana’s wild cards. The team’s Slovenian sprinter, Borut Bozic, won stage six leaving Tyler Farrar (Garmin) and Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) in his dust.

“I took a risk by going early, but I didn’t want to get boxed in. I’m very happy that I was able to show something nice. In Venlo it also went well but for a sprinter theirs only one place that counts.” Bozic had no teammates left to help him in the sprint, “I’m not a fighter, I prefer to be surrounded by a few teammates.”

Team manager Daan Luijkx was more than satisfied with his team’s performance in the first week, “What the team is doing in the Vuelta is fantastic. Winning a stage was one of the goals, we’re enjoying the moment.”

Vacansoleil’s Jens Mouris has also had a strong start, placing fourth in the opening prologue and 18th in the Valencia time trial while Mathe Pronk won the most aggressive rider awards following his efforts in stage six.
