U-23 British cyclist Bellis condition 'stable'

British cyclist Jonny Bellis was in a stable condition after a scooter accident in Italy near the British training base in Tuscany for next week's world championships.

The 21-year-old from the Isle of Man, who was on the shortlist for the world championships team, was being treated in a hospital in Florence.

Bellis had been in a critical condition but was described as "stable" on Sunday by a British Cycling spokesman.

British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford said: "All our focus and attention right now is on Jonny and his family and ensuring that they are looked after and given the best possible care at this time."

Bellis, who has competed for the Danish team Saxo Bank in his first full season as a professional this year, was a contender for the senior British team for the World Championship road race next Sunday.

He competed in the road race at the 2008 Olympics.

He is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the British academy set-up and has won a number of medals at junior level - including bronze in the Under-23 road race at the 2007 World Championships.

On the track, he is a three-time European champion.
