Pedals for Progress
Every year, affluent Americans buy 22 million new bicycles and discard millions of old ones, abandoning many more unused in basements, sheds, and garages. Most of these end up in our already overburdened landfills. Meanwhile, poor people overseas need cheap, non-polluting transportation to get to jobs, markets, customers, and schools. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 100,000 bicycles, 953 used sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 29 countries.

The East Coast Greenway
Walkers, cyclists, and other trail advocates have joined forces around an audacious project, a 3,000 mile traffic-free path linking East Coast cities from Maine to Florida. Launched 14 years ago, this vision for an urban alternative to the highly popular Appalachian Trail is now 21% built as an off-road route. In 2007 we will unveil our continuous route, with on-road routing linking completed off-road sections.
