Well, now that my commute went up by the factor of a 1000 (from 0.01 to around 10 miles, though not as impressive as others here ) I face the shower question again. On my first day of work I was not sure if there was a shower, so I rode slowly to not sweat. Took me around 50 minutes.

After I found out there is a (mediocre) shower, I started to ride in faster (anywhere between 34 and 38 minutes - I do need to get my own bike again...).

Plus 15 minutes to shower (I can't do it much faster b/c of the way the shower is located and laid out). Hmmm.

Anybody else noticing that hurrying doesn't necessarily make things faster? Anybody with a long commute facing the situation of not having a shower?

Reminds me of the Aussie kid in the gondola at whistler a few years back. "I like it when it's cold. You don't need a shower." Gondola went silent. People moved away and the windows were opened.

my commute is only 1.5 miles. however in the summer it's africa hot. i ride at a speed that provides enough airflow to keep me cool but not so fast that i sweat. if i have to stop for traffic i start puddling.

LOL - that is funny Andy. Had the bloke not said anything the windows would have stayed shut and no one would have known anything. Perceptions...

Well, I don't commute expecting to get to work quicker than if I drove or used mass transit.

I do it to save money, get exercise and to keep my mental health in check.

My commute is 38 miles. Need to shower. Also need to arrive by 0620 before coworkers see me in spandex. Another coworker arrives later and struts around. If I do get there later, I shower at the gym vs my building.

Well, well, I figured out a different solution. I went back from ten miles to five miles on the commute (with the ultimate goal of getting back to the 0.01 I mentioned at the beginning of the thread....). With less riding I have now more time to sit back and get fat. Brilliant!
