My Garmin went missing after a mountain bike ride. Pity the person who finds it and uploads the data to claim as their own only to discover how pathetic they ride.

Anyway, bike computer recommendation?
Pros and cons to each.

I don't use expensive computers or GPS units for the very reason you lost one. I use something that has large digits so my sorry ass almost 80 year old eyes can read it....speed, distance, trip time, odometer, time. that's all I need.

I have used all 3 of the major brands….and Wahoo still tops the list.

Garmin Pros: Connect IQ lets you access thousands of great apps to customize the unit to your liking. Good color screens

Garmin Cons: Touchscreens suck for a bike computer (rain, sweat, gloves), uploading is always hit or miss and you often have to close out the app and restart it to get rides to upload. Changing the fields you want to see is awful on Garmin. Just horrendous.

Wahoo pros: using the app to quickly change what you are seeing on the screen. Up to 11 fields on a single screen ( ROAM model) and you can just use the side buttons to reduce the number of fields you see. No need to change between different screens. Navigation has been significantly improved. NO TOUCH SCREEN

Wahoo cons: limited color application on the screens, but the Bolt v2 is better. Uploads are not as seamless as they once were, but still better than Garmin. Very good battery life.

I just recently got the Hammerhead and only have a handful of rides, but so far…

Hammerhead pros: best screen out there. Bright and easy to see. Very good navigation. Everyone raves about the Climb feature, but I have yet to really see it (but I have only ridden with the computer in FL & IL, so….🤷‍♂️)

Hammerhead cons: Battery life. I did a 4 hour ride today and burned through 50% of the battery. You can dial down the screen brightness and limit how things are connected to help save battery life, but if you supposedly have the “most advanced bike computer ever”, that seems kinda bushleague. It does have a touchscreen, but you can lock it out and just use the side buttons. Touch screen for bike computers is just a bad idea.

My ideal computer would be a Wahoo Roam v2, that has the added colors from the Bolt v2 screen, but keeps the current Roam screen. The new Stages Dash computers MAY fill that bill, but for now, they are still working on navigation through sites like Ride With GPS, Strava, etc. they say it is coming, but we’ll see.

Of the big 3, I would say it is Wahoo > Garmin > Hammerhead.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I second the Wahoo. Easy to use, reliable and has a better track record for quality and customer service than any other company.

I was a hardcore Wahoo fan and user for three years until Garmin released a widget to display blood sugar on the screen. That is a huge game-changer for a type 1 diabetic! I asked Wahoo if they would be adding similar functionality for their computers, and they said it wasn't even on their long-term product roadmap. I have the 1030+, and it has been great to use so far.

Garmin released a widget

The Garmin Connect IQ apps are a definite advantage of Garmins…I meant to mention that. I’m not much of a tinkerer when it comes to stuff like that, so really had no need for them but lots of people load a bunch of different customizations.

Makes total sense in your case, Hab….what are you using for the sensor?

Dexcom G6. Using the Garmin has transformed my riding because I can much more easily anticipate what my body needs given the effort I am putting into the ride.

That's awesome...it is a shame that SuperSapiens has not gotten FDA clearance for their device yet, but obviously having a Rx for the Dexcom alleviates that issue for you.

CK and Dale - I have an idea also medically related that I cannot/should not post here yet but that you might have some leads for. I'd love for you two to email me and I'll share what I've got. (You other regulars here, feel free to send me yours. If this played out it would be 1) a dream I've had 30 years and 2) life changing for a lot of people. jeff ries at spire tech dot com

Effing FDA is seemingly always ready to slow down ANYTHING! Garmin has a widget for SuperSapiens and I would love to try it out for the glucose response simulator alone. Dexcom is over the top expensive so I am always on the lookout for alternatives.

I was on a ride last fall with Brad Huff and he was showing off his SuperSapian device. Looked really interesting.

Ben, I emailed you.

Pulled the trigger on the Element Roam yesterday, getting it set up now.
Thanks for the recommendation.
